We were grateful to be invited to the state capitol this week to talk with lawmakers and advocate for chemical-free regenerative agriculture. We were happy to stick up for PA farmers and others who who developed Parkinson’s after being exposed to the toxic herbicide Paraquat. This is a chemical that is banned in China, however, state-owned ChemChina (Syngenta) continues to manufacture the chemical and sell it to the United States of America. Spending time with farmers and others whose lives have been turned upside down and whose bodies no longer work as they should makes us grateful that we are able to farm in a way that doesn’t expose us to toxic chemicals. Many of the farmers and others impacted by toxic herbicides and pesticides worked really hard their whole lives doing what they thought was right and something they were told was safe. Many of the older generations were not privileged to have access to the information and knowledge we are graced to have today. The Big Four too-big-to-fail and too-big-to-care multinational corporations (Bayer (Monsanto), ChemChina (Syngenta), BASF, and Corteva) that dominate the chemical-ag/GMO seed sector have phenomenal marketing campaigns. These companies have two main goals: more profits for themselves and their shareholders, and getting more and more farms dependent on their products. These companies are not looking out for what’s best for family farms. These companies are not looking out for what is best for the people applying and being exposed to their chemicals. Currently around 300 million acres of US farmland is being sprayed with herbicides that are considered to be “probable carcinogens” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. That is about three Californias worth of land mass. This is subsidized by tax payer money. Almost all farm subsidies go to chemical based agriculture. SEE MORE IN COMMENTS
