Apples are getting bigger every day, peaches at what we call shuck split, and we can determine that there will a lot of hand thinning to get those big juicy “ bend over” peaches. The last pic is one of the many insect monitoring traps deployed here. Many thanks to UNH Extension, U. Mass, and support funds from the NH Dept. Of Agriculture Markets and Food. This one sends real time pictures of captured Oriental Fruit Moth adults to a U. Mass grad student studying new ways to better monitor pests so we can make better management decisions.

We gotta admit for a while there we did not think it was going to happen. Record heat in April, then frost, then two weeks of unusual cool dry weather to start May, and finally rain the last two days,,,,,,,,the sun came out this afternoon and there are going to some busy bees visiting apple blossoms this week end. Mother Nature can be difficult partner.

While many people were thrilled with last weeks above normal temps, fruit buds responded as if it were early May. For tree fruit growers across the northeast those temps set us up for a possible disastrous crop loss Monday night / Tues morning. Take look at this chart, in Concord apples are at what we call 1/2” green/ tight cluster. Southern NH and Mass are at tight cluster. Mid to low 20’s will likely cause damage. How much will depend on how low temps go, duration, relative humidity, and other factors that we have no control over. Keep positive thought for us

We love it when one of our Apple Hill farmily members makes the news. Congratulations Sarah, all of us are so proud.

There are many seasons here on the farm, each is the end of one but a new beginning of another. This evening Diane, Mary, Tia, and Avery put the finishing touch on on putting the farmstand to sleep for the winter. We want to thank all of our fantastic customers for a great year, we look forward to seeing you all next year. As we closed the door and headed up to our house a snow squall and a very cold looking full moon was waiting for us. Time to feed the wood stove and then setting in to the office (ugh) for months worth of paper work.
