I have a full length video that was posted yesterday, but for those of you with shorter attention spans...here's a shorter form video of the corn test plot!
Knowing is half the battle when it comes to picking the corn seed (or any seed for that matter) that will work best on your farm. Being fairly new into planting corn, as there is still quite a bit of milo grown here, I lack the years of experience in selecting which hybrid will work on our operation. To make up for the lack of experience on my end, I looked to some local test plots to see what would fit our operation...and I wasn't overly impressed with what I found. It was mainly sparse plots with results containing no context with more bragging about plot winners than anything else. This did not sit well with me. After venting my frustration of this on social media, the folks at CVA reached out to me and asked if I wanted to be part of the solution to this problem. To which I enthusiastically said "heck yeah let's do it!"
One the day of planting, Central Valley Ag brought out an entire crew to help get this plot put in and they worked with the speed a racing pit crew! They loaded/unloaded seed and marked out all the different varieties I planted whilst I entered everything into my monitor to track it on JD Ops. Often times, they moved fast enough that they were waiting on me to go by the time I had my part done!
In addition to the varieties that CVA brought out, I also reached out to many of our local dealers to see if they wanted to join in with this plot. Every Single One of the local dealers I contacted enthusiastically agreed to provide me with seed to have a few of their numbers in as well. In the end, there are 23 corn varieties out here and I am very excited to see how they all do.
All these varieties are great and all, but if I fail to provide valuable context, the only difference between my plot and the others around here will just be that my plot is kinda big...and that's not good enough for me. I plan on discussing soil samples, fertilizer programs, our herbicide regiment, and our fungicide plans as well as including data from a soil moisture probe and scouting data from Taranis!
I will inundate you all with data so that you can make a fully contextual choice that will fit your operation and give you a better chance at good return on investment.
Thank you again to Central Valley Ag for helping this go from a typical farmer gripe to a full-blown solution! I very much appreciate it.
