Once Upon A Little Farm

Once Upon A Little Farm Living life in the country on the small farm that has been in our family for over 100 years.

Tales of our adventures living on this little farm that has been in my family for over a century. We are merely just a hobby farm now, but I aim to give my kids some experiences that they are not likely to get anywhere else in life.

My right hand girl. Always wants to do everything Mama does and must always wear a dress (she definitely does NOT get that from her Mama). She was helping by sliding all the bags closer to the back for me. Repurposed bags - it's really pig feed in there.

Dirt. They're not making anymore of it. If anything, it's becoming an endangered item. Simple, yet complex. Full of living organisms. Designed by God himself to cover the Earth and sustain the crops both wild and that we plant in it to feed ourselves, others, the animals, the world.
It's a crazy notion, I know, but I am a firm believer that if more people still had their hands in the dirt, our nation would be in a much better spot. Is there a mental health program anywhere that has those struggling out in the dirt? There should be. We have a saying here: Dirt don't hurt.
In fact, it does a wealth of good.
This particular patch of dirt has been in my family for 121 years and I can safely say it has been a garden plot for at least 100 of those years.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow --- for this hand-me-down dirt and all who have helped us keep it that way over the decades and for those few who have helped me keep it a garden for the past 18 years. ❤️

My heart is so full!! I waited 17 years for a tractor and still pinch myself that it arrived last July (thank you Aaron Shutt t)❤️. Growing up here as the only child, I had to be strong and lift heavy things, but I wasn't allowed to drive tractor. My mom sold all 3 of my dad's tractors shortly after he died in 2005. Aaron and I moved back here in 2008.
When we bought the tractor, we also bought a tiller, which arrived last fall. We are very late getting to the garden this year because we realized last week that the PTO shaft on the tiller was too long and needed shortening. I picked up the shaft today and after a week of teaching math, our dear friend Matt Cicero was over here teaching me how to use the tiller this evening. Thank you, Matt!!
I realize to many this is a rather insignificant blip on the screen of life, but to me, this is huge. Like tears in my eyes huge. ❤️

The next on a long list of 2026 repairs happened yesterday and today. Huge thanks to Jed Miller of Factotum Services for pointing up the stone foundation on this 174 year old farmhouse, repairing the concrete covering over our well (23 ft deep, hand dug, and no idea how old), and pointing up and repairing cracks in the "shop" (the original milkhouse here on the farm back when cans of milk were kept cool in cold water - before the invention of the bulk tank). Before and after pics...

This year's 4-H Market Poultry Project is underway! We picked up the chicks last night. Adorable yellow fuzzballs right now, but by July 12th (judging day), they will look nothing like this. These birds are bred to go from day old chick in the palm of your hand to 6-10 lb. roasting chicken in 8 weeks!! A number of factors come into play in the weight variance at the end: what were they fed and how much of it?, where were they kept?, were they given too many fruit and veggie scrap snacks that they didn't eat their regular ration?, were they too cold? Etc. etc. etc.
Onnolee Shutt and Reid Shutt will each have 1 pen of 2 birds up for sale in the Livingston County 4-H Livestock Auction on July 25th. The winning bidder takes home already processed, whole roasting chickens that day!

From the road she may look good, but close up tells another story. The trim work on our 1852 farmhouse was last painted approximately 22 years ago. Along with the peeling paint, there's some broken trim, pillars in disrepair and rotten soffit - and whatever else might be too high for our eyes to clearly see.
Toss in a chimney that's chipping away.
We are excited to have F&F Painting&Solutions LLC contracted to restore this exterior later this summer.

We've had contractors here this week looking at some repair projects for this old barn - one for some better drainage and new gravel, and the other for foundation repair and beams that need TLC. We received compliments on the condition this old gal is in for 114 years old. My grandfather commissioned it to be built in 1912. At 126 feet long and 40 feet wide, the story passed down to me is that a portable sawmill was set up here at the farm for 3 years as they worked to gather lumber from our own woods. The contractors we met with today have worked on many barns throughout Western NY and have seen a lot of gambrel roofed barns but said that the framework inside this one is unique.
