I wanted to give Dry January a shot. No pun intended. But yeah, it works. 😅
Here’s the irony. I’m one of the founding principals of a company that literally makes mocktail syrups… and I’ve had a serious drinking problem over the last few years. Being honest about that is exactly why I wanted to try Dry January in the first place.
So here I am on Day 7 of Dry January. Okay fine. Damp January. 💧
Damp January means that I gave myself permission for a couple of cheat moments, and honestly… the results surprised me when I decided to cash a few of them in.
Cheat #1: one single celebratory shot with my little brother and my best friend for his 50th. Other than that, I spent the night crushing Mock Me Dark Maul Berry mocktails while everyone else went full Olympic-level open bar.
I really thought that his B’Day party was going to be harder to get through and that I would convince myself it would be okay to go full out belly up to the bar drink-for-drink with my buddies. But I stuck to my guns and just had the one planned shot.
At last call, I think April and I were the only two sober people out of about 100 guests. And here’s the wild part: I still felt included. Mock Me in hand. No awkward questions. No FOMO. Just vibes.
Cheat #2: the night we got home after my stepson’s car accident. Stress won. Bourbon happened. Then more bourbon. Then the couch won.
And that’s where the real lesson kicked in.
I hated the feeling of being drunk. For context, I’ve been a heavy
bourbon drinker for almost five years. Handles disappearing like it was their job. Being tipsy used to be baseline. Now? It feels like the villain in the story.
Even stranger: I woke up with an actual hangover. Headache and all. I haven’t had morning-after regret in years… turns out my body quietly renegotiated the contract.
Small but noticeable win: mornings.
Aside from one exception, I’ve been waking up clear-headed and refreshed — not stumbling out of a night of bourbon-assisted “sleep,” which, it turns out, isn’t great sleep at all. Falling asleep takes a little longer, but I’m settling into a rhythm. And honestly? I’ll trade a few extra minutes at night for better mornings every time.
Other than that, I’m feeling pretty damn good. More energy during the day. Clearer head. I have noticed I’m eating a bit more, so I’m keeping an eye on it — the last thing I want is to give up drinking for a month just to put on 20 pounds.

🍹 And next time you’re out, ask your bartender or server if they carry Mock Me Mocktails. If they don’t tell them they should.
