One of the biggest misconceptions about pack goats is that they naturally know how to hit the trail carrying gear. In reality, becoming a pack goat takes years of careful training and conditioning.

Young goats start by learning basic trail manners. Examples: following a handler, crossing water, navigating obstacles, and staying calm in new environments. As they mature, they’re gradually introduced to lightweight packs and longer hikes. Weight is added slowly and only when their bodies are physically developed enough to handle it.

A healthy pack goat can comfortably carry a percentage of its body weight, but conditioning, nutrition, hoof care, and recovery are just as important as the pack itself. Every goat is different, and a good handler adjusts expectations based on the individual animal.

The goal isn’t to see how much a goat can carry. The goal is to develop a confident, athletic hiking partner that can safely travel long distances while enjoying life on the trail.

A good pack goat is built through patience, consistency, and respect for the animal, not shortcuts.

Backpacking in Utah looks beautiful… but most of the trip revolves around water.

Before we ever hit the trail, we map out reliable water sources because both people and pack goats need steady hydration in the desert. Dry camps, heat, and long stretches without water can change your entire plan fast.

The goats handled the miles like champs, but good water planning is what really makes trips like this possible.

6 miles in with the goats to an alpine lake, gaining about 2,600 feet and camping at 12,500 ft.

Day one was windy but clear and comfortable for most of the hike. The morning at camp started sunny and calm.

By late morning, clouds began to build and drift in over the ridgeline, which is pretty typical in the high country as the day warms up. We kept an eye on conditions and adjusted plans, deciding to skip the 13er and head out instead.

A simple reminder that in alpine terrain, conditions can shift through the day, and plans should shift with them.

What it actually looks like when we’re packing.

Saddles on, panniers loaded, and everything carefully balanced before we head out. Every detail matters including fit, weight distribution, and making sure each goat is comfortable before we ever hit the trail.

Most pack goats can carry about 20–25% of their body weight, typically around 30–50 pounds depending on the individual. They can comfortably hike 5–10 miles in a day, depending on terrain, elevation, and conditioning. The goal isn’t to push limits it’s to keep them strong, sound, and willing to work.

We pack in to set up base camp several miles in, and once camp is established, they don’t carry much. On longer backpacking trips with bigger mileage, they’re not packing the entire time because we’re intentional about when they’re carrying and when they’re just traveling with us.

It’s a steady, thoughtful process and that’s exactly how it should be.

The babies are ready for their meet-and-greets!

Tiny hooves, wiggly tails, and absolutely zero respect for personal space, just how we like it. Come hang out, get your goat fix, and prepare to fall in love with the smallest (and sassiest) members of the crew.

Most people think are just “stubborn” but they’re actually communicating when they are showing signs of stubbornness!

Short bleats (the noise a goat makes) = checking in.
Loud calls = stress or separation.
Ears and body posture tell you if they’re confident or unsure.

And if they refuse to move? It’s not attitude. It’s information.

Rocky terrain might look rough to us… but for goats, it’s basically a built-in pedicure 🐐✨

Their hooves are constantly growing, so walking on rocks naturally files them down and helps prevent overgrowth. It also keeps their hooves strong and properly shaped as they move across uneven ground.

And here’s the big one—rocks drain well. Less moisture = fewer hoof issues, especially things like foot rot. Dry feet are healthy feet.

So while we’re out here watching every step… they’re out here thriving.
