It's a hot one out there. To keep the plants inside greenhouses a little cooler, they've been covered with shade cloth. A honey grabbing some shade on a cucumber leaf. A row of cucumbers and celery. The pole bean are starting to climb. We were late getting the planted. The reason wad the annual woodchuck war.
Borage is starting to flower, bees just love it. It smells and tastes like cucumbers, just a little fuzzier. Behind the Borage is a new planting of sage. Maybe fresh sage for Thanksgiving? Still planting, both direct seeding and transplants. It almost never end till mid October.

They are ambush hunters that don't build webs. There's a lot of them here. They grow big enough sometimes that you can hear them running across the landscape fabric.

Crimson clover flower. The clover was planted last Fall as part of a mixed cover crop. The clover will provide pollen for insects while adding nitrogen to the soil. There are also peas, hairy vetch, and rye. The peas and vetch will also add nitrogen. The rye will add a lot of organic matter to the ground.
A cover crop protects the soil from erosion while at the same time adding organic matter, along with nitrogen in the case of the clover. This cuts down on the amount of compost and fertilizer we need

A couple of weeks before planting we'll mow this down and cover it with leaves. The first vegetable planted here will be zucchini.
