There is a time to fight! There is a time to defend yourself, hold someone accountable, and when absolutely necessary, remove a threat. But that should never be where we start. Start with respect. Start with kindness. Start with mercy.
Start by treating people like human beings, even when you disagree with them. Give people the benefit of the doubt when it is deserved. Help when you can. Walk away when you can. Speak the truth without needing to humiliate someone.
Being decent isn't weakness. Mercy isn't surrender. Kindness doesn't mean you allow yourself or others to be abused. It means you have the discipline to choose the better response before choosing the harder one.
The world doesn't need more people looking for reasons to be angry, offended, or ready for confrontation. It needs more people who understand that strength is having the ability to act, but the wisdom to know when not to.
Be respectful. Be kind. Be merciful.
And when those things are no longer enough, stand your ground and do what must be done. But always strive to be a decent human being first. That is strength under control.
