Contoocook Creamery at Bohanan Farm a fifth generation NH family dairy producing milk since 1907. Bohanan Farm is home to 115 milk cows who produce 14,000 8 oz.

The farm works closely with a nutritionist and veterinarian to formulate a balanced diet for the cows that blends the homegrown grasses and corn with other nutrients and grains to support the cows' health and production. It takes healthy cows to achieve the number one goal of producing milk of the highest quality.

June is National Dairy Month so it felt like the perfect time to share our story!

It began in 1907 when, Lester Bohanan, purchased the farm that we still call home today. Lester worked with a team of horses maintaining the railroad line between Concord and Claremont. It was that work that brought him to Contoocook, where he met Blanche Eaton. He bought the farm across the river from her, and three years later they were married. None of them could have imagined that more than a century later, five generations of our family would still be farming this same land.

Lester and Blanche raised their children, Ivan, Betty, and Ashton. They would cross the steel arch bridge over the Contoocook River on their way to school, leaving cans of milk on the railroad siding for the train to pick up and deliver to Concord Dairy.

The second generation carried the farm forward through innovation. Ivan and Ashton married Jeanette and Priscilla, and continued building both their families and farm. Ivan helped build a larger barn, expanded the farm's acreage, and introduced new farming practices that increased the herd's productivity.

The third generation brought even more change. Ivan and Priscilla's son, Glenn, studied dairy science at the University of New Hampshire before returning home to farm. Together with his wife, Adele, Glenn expanded the operation by purchasing additional land, building a new heifer barn, and adopting new technologies. The farm moved from dry-baled hay to silage systems, upgraded equipment, improved manure management, and expanded the herd. Through these efforts, the farm grew while preserving the open farmland.

By the time the fourth generation stepped in, the dairy industry was changing rapidly. Heather, alongside her husband Jamie, Glenn, and Adele, embraced the challenge of adapting to a new era. They modernized feeding systems, built a larger milking parlor, expanded the herd, and improved nearly every aspect of the farm.

One of the biggest turning points in our history came in 2011 when we launched Contoocook Creamery. In 2019, instead of sending all of our milk into the commodity market, we made the decision to process and bottle our own milk right here on the farm. Today, our milk travels from the cows to the processing plant through a pipe right on the farm and can reach customers within days of being produced.

The creamery became a way to ensure that our family farm could continue thriving for future generations. By bottling our own milk and selling our own beef and farm products, we created a path forward during a time when many dairy farms were disappearing across New Hampshire.

Today, Jamie and Heather are the heart of the farm. Their dedication and willingness to adapt have helped guide us through challenges. What began with horses and milk cans on a railroad siding has become a diversified farm spanning hundreds of acres, producing dairy products, beef, vegetables, and fresh milk for families across New Hampshire.

Now the fifth generation is helping write the next chapter. Nate, Si, and Bram are continuing the tradition that began more than a century ago. Each generation has left the farm stronger than they found it, and we are proud to see the next generation stepping up with that same commitment. We're still here, working the land, caring for our animals, and building a future for the next generations that follow.

Meet Brandy (2239)! This girl will be turning 5 at the end of July! Her dam is Yank, and Brandy recently had her third calf on May 17th. Her calf's name is Bowtruckle. She's currently averaging 110 lbs of milk per day, which is impressive!

With a hot week ahead, Brandy has been making the most of the sunshine. While our cows produce a lot of milk, they also spend plenty of time relaxing between meals and trips to the parlor!
