Chickaletta Family Farm & Coop

Chickaletta Family Farm & Coop Chicken Eggs • Hand Gathered • Farm Fresh • Raised on an Organic Diet • Humanely Raised & Handled Hi! We are so glad you are here! I was hooked. And that's ok!

Steven & I had this crazy idea summer/ fall of 2020, and we wanted to raise chickens for meat and eggs. I said, "Let's do this!!" I knew I wanted a colorful flock and a bonus if I had colorful eggs. So I set out reading all the things about all the chickens and I knew what I wanted- large, standard chickens who lay medium to XL eggs. We started with meat birds and raised a few batches for ourselve

s and friends and family. By April 2021, I had my first set of "layers." By August 2021 I was up to 30+ chickens. April 2022, I added more and by summer of 2022 I had 53!! Steven was hooked (he really just likes the food haha). Everyone was hooked. Our girls are more than just a "producer" and are our pets with a purpose. We give them the absolute best of everything we can. We believe happy hens lay the best eggs and happy hens are HEALTHY. We do not force our hens to lay and we do not force them into molting. We let nature take its course. Our hens egg production will naturally slow or stop in the late fall through winter/ early spring. During the spring and summer months they generally lay every day or every other day, maybe two. Sometimes, excessive heat can cause a slow down in egg production. We will not ever force them into laying when their body is taking a break. We are not certified organic, however we do our absolute best take as much of an all natural, organic, and holistic approach to raising our flock. Our flock is not "disposable" if they can be saved we will do our absolute best to save them. So how do you get our eggs? We are not sold in stores and we don't sell to restaurants. We will be at the YLNI Farmers Market in downtown Fort Wayne on Saturday's & Monroeville Farmers Market on Sunday's unless otherwise posted on our social media page. Off weekends, we will have the self serve table and cooler out at the end of the driveway. We also offer some, but limited delivery options. We can deliver if we will be in the general area of the delivery address. Both Steven and I work Monday through Friday 8-12 hour days at our regular jobs- in Fort Wayne. We ask that you please be courteous of our availability. In-Person pick ups can be scheduled M-F from 6:00pm- 8:30pm. Weekends offer more availability. Porch pick ups can be worked out as well. And of course, please just ask if times do not work for you. We are happy to work something out!

Weelllllllp… how’s your Sunday going? 😅

Mine? Greaaaaat. Apparently I’m babysitting chickens today.

This morning I found some of the big chickens hanging out with the little chickens. Then Steven and I got back from selling one of his old mountain bikes and riding around Franke Park, and somehow there were a couple more big chickens in there… and one little chicken out. 😂

The plan was to take the mesh tarp down (we did yesterday) and START transitioning everyone together. I wasn’t exactly expecting them to start mingling on their own quite this soon.

So here I am: chair in place, drink in hand, supervising what appears to be a very chaotic poultry social hour.

Honestly, it’s mostly going okay. A little pecking, a little posturing, a lot of “who are you and why are you in my space?” But so far nobody has started a full-blown chicken riot.

Wish me luck. 🐔🍹🤦‍♀️

Our second and last group (for now) has graduated 🥰!!

The littlest say, “We’ve moved to the BIG coop safely separated from our big siblings, we graduated from 24/7 heat and will get heat at night, we graduated to the big ni**le style waterer, and we are eating our people out of food so our human lady gave us two big chicken feeders and bought extra food. She says we can start having treats because we’ve been so good and graduated.

Soon, we will have our fencing and divider removed and will be able to interact more with our big siblings. Some of our sisters like to lay beside our pen and get antsy when we start screaming and freaking out and some of our other siblings will come Running to our “rescue”.

We are 4 weeks and our siblings are 9 weeks old today!

Chirp chirp 🐣 🐥 The newest crew has arrived.

Still TBD if I like doing two larger groups like we did this year, or multiple smaller groups as we have done in the past.

Prayers, with more stable warmer temps this group does better than the last - no poopy butt! Or at least not as much! Thankfully we haven’t lost a single one… but the poopy butt is no bueno 😅😵‍💫😬🥴 FRIYKYK!!

We are just over 4 weeks old now and our other “siblings” arrive Monday!

The humans finished up additional coop improvements recently and we have been enjoying our big coop!

Peep the human guy putting a light in for our human lady. Now she can see at night to collect eggs when it gets dark - we won’t be laying until mid to late August and by then, the days are beginning to get shorter and it will be darker sooner. As “spring chicks” we will lay through our first winter so having a light to collect our eggs in the dark is super duper.

The roost pulley was also redone to make it easier for the humans to raise. Raising it makes coop clean out easy peasy.

We will give up our heat lamp soon too. We don’t need it during the day but the nights are still slightly cold for us.

We are also learning how to roost using floor level baby roosts that the lady made for us, using scrap lumber. Buuuuuut, we mostly like to stand and play on it during the day and sleep huddled together on the floor at night 😅🤷🏼‍♀️
