Join Clemson Extension, S.C. Sea Grant Consortium, and North Inlet- Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve for Healthy Pond Series 2026 Part 2.

During the Healthy Pond Series Part 1 event of 2026, participants learned about stormwater pond ecology and water quality from Dr. Erik Smith. In this second installment, we will build on the recommendations presented by Dr. Smith and explore the role of vegetated shoreline buffers in maintaining healthy ponds.

Clemson Extension's Water Resources Agent, Samantha Porzelt, will discuss the benefits of shoreline vegetation, recommended plant species for stormwater ponds, and considerations for sourcing and establishing these plants. The program will conclude with an open question-and-answer session and opportunities to network with local municipal stormwater professionals and environmental education organizations.

Please register for Healthy Pond Series 2026 Part 2 at the following link:

You'll learn to identify native plants, then get hands-on restoring this pollinator haven.
You'll help mark existing vegetation for preservation, then dig and pot plants for safekeeping while the site is cleared and replanted.

No experience needed; just curiosity and willingness to dig in!

Bring a picnic lunch and a refillable water bottle. Coffee, drinks, and snacks will be provided.

Children are welcome. This event will be held outdoors near a pond; children will require close supervision.

Volunteers are welcome to camp at the park the night before. Reservations are required and can be secured at https://reserve.southcarolinaparks.com/lee

🌱 LAWN SCHOOL β€” September 19

If you've ever stood in your yard wondering what that grass actually is and what it needs from you, this is the program for you.

Lawn School is a full day of everything you ever wanted to know about growing grass on the coast β€” plus the chance to ask questions all day long to professionals whose only goal is to give you good information. Whether you want to do it yourself or just be an informed customer when you hire a lawn care company, you'll leave knowing what to ask for and why.

We'll cover the basic maintenance and preventative steps that keep a coastal lawn healthy, and walk you through the tools you should have and how to use them effectively β€” from adjusting your sprinkler head to putting out fertilizer at the right rate. We'll go through centipede, St. Augustine, zoysia, and Bermudagrass, what each one wants, and a month-by-month calendar so you know what to do and when.

You'll leave with a game plan for what to do year round in your yard to have a more resilient, healthy lawn.

Come out for a solid introductory course, in person, and bring your burning questions. Research-based answers, no agenda except to inform. 🌾

Did you know that the Clemson Cooperative Extension office in Horry County serves as a Mother’s Milk Bank of South Carolina depot site?

Check out this feature with Rural Health and Nutrition Agent Bailee Floyd, who took over management of the Horry County depot site four years ago! Since then, the depot has continued to grow and serve as a local resource for milk donors while supporting babies across South Carolina.

We’re proud to be a part of this important work! 🩡

For Breastfeeding Awareness Month, we're proud to highlight one of our amazing Milk Drop Depot locations!

πŸ“ Horry County Clemson Extension has been a valued MMBSC depot site for the past four years, helping local donors make a lifesaving impact. Thanks to the dedication of Site Champion Bailee and the generosity of Horry County donors, more than 17,000 ounces of donor milk have been collected and sent to the Mothers' Milk Bank of South Carolina!

Our depot site champions are the heart of our statewide donation network, making it easier for approved donors to share their extra milk with vulnerable infants in need. Thank you, Bailee, for your commitment to supporting donor families and helping ensure donor milk reaches the babies who need it most. πŸ’œπŸΌ
