👁️ Scientists have identified a protein that may be preventing damaged eyes from repairing themselves, opening a possible new approach to restoring lost vision.
Unlike animals such as zebrafish, which can naturally replace damaged retinal neurons, mammals have very limited regenerative abilities in their eyes. Once these specialized cells are destroyed, the resulting vision loss is often permanent.
This is one reason diseases such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration remain so difficult to treat.
Now, researchers have identified a potential barrier to retinal regeneration: a protein called PROX1.
The protein helps regulate the behavior of cells in the retina, but it may also prevent certain supporting cells from transforming into new neurons after an injury.
Scientists investigated whether blocking PROX1 could remove this restriction and reactivate the retina's natural repair mechanisms.
In experiments involving mice, suppressing the protein encouraged retinal support cells to acquire regenerative properties and produce new neurons, helping repair damaged retinal tissue.
The researchers also reported improvements in visual function that persisted over time, suggesting that the newly generated cells could contribute to restoring sight.
The findings raise an intriguing possibility: some of the biological processes needed for retinal repair may still exist in mammals but remain suppressed by molecular signals.
However, these results come from animal experiments. Scientists have not yet demonstrated that blocking PROX1 can safely regenerate human retinal cells or reverse blindness in patients.
Further research is needed to determine whether this approach could eventually benefit people with degenerative eye diseases.
Still, the discovery offers a promising direction for regenerative medicine, where future treatments might do more than protect surviving retinal cells. They could potentially help the eye replace some of the cells it has already lost.
