🚨🌲 BVFD PSA: It’s March 1st… and you know what that means 🌲🚨

Burning season is officially in effect in the Wild & Wonderful.

West Virginia doesn’t play when it comes to protecting our forests — and neither do we. Before you strike that match thinking you’re in a country music video, read this first 👇

🔥 WV Spring Burning Season March 1 – May 31
🚫 NO OUTDOOR BURNING from 7am to 5pm
Yes. Even if it’s cloudy.
Yes. Even if it “rained yesterday.”
Yes. Even if you “ain’t never had a problem before.”

🌲 General Burning Guidelines (aka Don’t Make Us Come Visit You)
✔️ All fires must have a ring or safety strip
✔️ Safety strip must be 10 feet wide, cleared completely around the pile
✔️ Fire must be attended at all times until it is 100% out
✔️ Only burn vegetative materials (leaves, brush, yard clippings) — no trash, no couches, no “mystery pile from 2008”

💸 Fines & Consequences
If your negligence causes a forest fire:
💰 Criminal fines: $100–$1,000
💰 Additional civil penalty: $200
💰 AND the State can recover the full cost of fighting that fire

Translation: If the State rolls trucks because of you… they can send you the bill.

Landowners are required to take all practicable means to suppress ANY fire on their property. If you don’t? The State can collect what it costs them.

⚙️ Using Spark-Throwing Equipment?
Power shovels, sawmills, machinery on fire-prone land must have proper spark arrestors.

📄 Need to Burn During Prohibited Hours?
Commercial burning requires a permit from the WV Division of Forestry.

Listen, Holler Heathens — we love a good brush pile as much as the next Appalachian, but spring winds + dry leaves + sunshine = recipe for “why is the fire department here?”

Let’s protect our woods, our homes, and our volunteer firefighters’ blood pressure.

If you have questions, ask before you light.
If it gets away from you, call 9-1-1 early.

Stay safe. Stay smart. And for the love of everything green this March…
🔥 No daytime burning. 🔥

❤️ If You Give a Farm Mom a Minute

If you give a farm mom a minute,
she’ll probably reach for her coffee.

But before she takes a sip,
she’ll hear the side door slam...
and someone will be yelling
that the dog drug off a boot.

She’ll head to the yard,
find the boot in the mud,
and notice the chickens are in the garden again.

She’ll chase them out,
see the empty water trough,
and grab the hose to fill it.

While the trough is filling,
she’ll remember she never switched the laundry.

When she steps inside,
there’s a trail of barn dirt through the kitchen,
a math worksheet stuck to the fridge with jelly,
and a sink full of cups,
because no one ever uses just one.

She’ll start the washer,
but then she’ll hear the tractor sputter...
the one her husband swore he’d fix last week.

She’ll wander out to see what he's doing,
get sidetracked pulling a few weeds from the flower bed,
and end up helping a calf out of the fence.

By the time she sits back down,
her coffee is ice cold,
her list is twice as long,
and that “minute” she asked for
is gone like daylight in December.

And just when she thinks the day has finally slowed,
she’ll step outside and hears it...
the steady splash of water hitting dirt.

The trough she started hours ago
is now an overflowing pond.
Her hand are now muddy,
her boots are soaked,
but she laughs anyway.

Because this is her life.
Messy.
Chaotic.
And she wouldn't trade it fpr the world!

This weekend was very productive as we prepare for snow. Chopped the corn maze and packed into the silage pit. Put hay out to all the cows. Cleaned up
All our hay and flowers from our photo ops. Disked the remaining pumpkins for the livestock to eat. Put everything away from our play areas. Put the camper in the barn. Stored all the machinery. Changed fuel filters on the tractors. All in time for a 30 degree temperature change by Monday.

Only took one photo. Daisy, Star, and Rosie seem to think they should be meeting guests today and enjoying all that attention.
