For all of those invested in our Friday late night episode..

We put the cow down this morning. I knew she wasn't going to make it, and they have to have the spirit to live no matter how many meds you give them and what you do for them.

It sucks. But its life.

Her daughter is just fine (as you can see), and we will raise her to hopefully be a future milk cow just like her momma Chloe was.

Go find your local farmer and invest in them the way yall invested in this story 😆

We would love to be your farmer!

This little girl needs a name, drop one in the comments if you have a good one that is fitting of her momma's name Chloe.

Also, I want to thank those of you who have been following us for some time and finally have made your way into our little farm store. We love to see so many new faces, and we also LOVE to see our regulars back and shopping so often.

I appreciate you all who support our little dream, more than you know!

~ your farmer, Heidi

We will be busy this morning prepping the farm store, and taking care of our animals. We would love another crazy busy day like yesterday was!

We can still make more bundles, we still have some flank steaks, flavored burger patties and a few brats that are on sale yet!

Load up for the weekend or just stock your freezers!

Our hotdogs have found so many new homes, and so has our mozzarella, we dont have a lot left! We just made a HUGE batch of it last week Monday and its already almost depleted 🫣

This calf was standing about 15 minutes after we pulled her out last night and walking shortly after. Shes got a strong spirit in her!

Some have fancy Friday nights, while others have emergency elbow deep up a cows' backside Friday nights..Working quickly to save cow and calf.

I saw she was due today, but my allergies made me miserable and I didnt go check her, but my gut told me I should. My tiredness won.

My employee was finishing up her chores and saw she was laying in a stuck position and panting so she called me. Thankfully, else both cow and calf would have been dead by morning.

So Tyler and I put our boots back on and went and dragged her out of the sand bed, rolled her in a bucket *shes long so was not easy*, got her on some dirt and her water broke. I knew this calf had to come now.

The second i reached inside her I could tell the calf was backwards. The back feet were coming out first and you want the front feet and head first. It had to be pulled and when they do, you gotta be top speed quick because you have less than 2 seconds or the calf will suck in fluids and drown inside the mom.

So we pulled it and pulled quick, hung her upside down to drain any fluid she may have breathed in, got her lungs going and she was standing within 15 minutes of being born!

The mom... we will see what morning brings. I dont have much hope.

Thats farming. You can have a week of lots of death and with this heat we have had our fair share, and you can loose $7000 or more or less of animals in a day or week. Thats a random number, but it has happened before. Ive seen enough freak accidents beyond our control.

Also, I was so stoked that I got her IV needle in the first try! Steady stream of blood with one poke. Sometimes thats extremely hard to do on some cows. You can not see their veins like on a human, so its a shot in the dark.

We gave her some sugar, some other calming meds and hope shes got the gusto to want to live.

You absolutely can not make a dairy cow live, they have to have the will to do so and they give up quicker than any other animal I know.

Yet I still own them 🫠

For all of those that ask how I do it..?

1) I have the literal best people in my life
2) you just do it - for me life and death hangs in the balance in situations and sometimes you have mere seconds to spare. My heart literally stops and adrenaline runs through my veins like you wouldnt believe
3) I give it all I've got, life wont let ya go halfway
4) my parents didnt raise a quitter, they raised a doer and I am so grateful
5) wonderfully amazing customers who continue to support us so we can keep living the best *while also very hard* life and raise our children in the best place to ever have a childhood

Earned every single bite.

Loved it even more.

Good food is so simple and worth every effort although it doesnt even require much!

Bottom line.. know your farmer and know your food! You'll enjoy it that much more, I promise!

Yes, we buy butter by the case around here, and my butter dish always has 4-5 sticks on it 😂

It wasn't a bad day, just a few moments on a very very busy and extremely hot morning, that i thought were going to make the whole day go south quickly.

All that chaos by about 615 am and I still had to finish a bunch of chores, load up a trailer full of steers and run them to the butcher, turn around and run a couple cows for my dad to his place, come back and be leaving again by 10 am at the latest, with my other trailer, to head to the processor and pick up another load of meat and more flavored burger patties *stay tuned*, and be back by about 1 pm so that customers who ordered their quarters and halves could pick their shares up before the day was over. Then do night chores and cook dinner.

So we hurried. Got it all done, sweat our butts off and are now very tired 😅

Also, do not recommend hauling a lot of meat in weather this hot and humid. Its not bad at all until you have to start unloading and getting it all in the freezer before things thaw, which is about under 2 minutes!

But, the best part is, both heifers are standing AND walking well for now!

Throw in a toddler and teething baby, little sleep at night, and its a fun life 😉

Last Thursday evening one of my dairy cows was noticeably 'off feed' or not eating for some reason. There was a slight change in their diet and that alone can throw a cow off balance and to quit eating.

Dairy cows are not easy. They are beyond finicky, take a lot of work, require the most care and are not nearly as hardy as a beef cow who's only job is to raise a calf. They dont even really act the same in mannerisms either.

Ask a dairy farmer. 😆

They're like a whole different species 😂

Anyways. So I gave her a few pills for her gut, to hopefully get her back on track. She was about 6 months pregnant and I didnt want to lose her or her calf.

By Friday morning she was down and probably not ever going to get back up. Her attitude was OK but down cows usually stay down forever..

I drenched her some fluids and energy because she needed a lot of it. (Tyler was feeding colostrum to a different newborn calf in the background). Gave her some more pills and some fresh hay, and hoped for the best.

By that night I knew she was done for. Hurt worse knowing I was going to lose her calf also but what can you do. So I asked a friend to come out and harvest her and when they did, they found a tumor on her back quarter. I would never have known why she went down and I would have blamed something else, but now we know!

*If we ever butcher an animal on sight and save the meat, it is NEVER sold to our customers. We dont feed you dairy cows, we raise our steers for you and they all go through a USDA certified butcher from beginning to end. Not that this is bad or wrong at all, but these types of situations are for family meat only.*

We pour our hearts and all of our finances into these animals, and its not fun at all to lose one, but thats part of livestock.. deadstock.

With a higher cattle market it hurts even worse. For easy numbers, that cow could be worth around $2000 plus, and her calf worth a little over $1100 at just a day old.

If I've ever told you its like letting your hundred dollar bills out the window of the car in the wind.. I am truly serious.

Can lose thousands quickly in this life.

Still happy to live it though! Just listen to the commentary of a 3 year old and what she is all learning. Farm kids learn life and death and so much more, before they can even comprehend what it means.
