Stormie and I started Deep Roots Farm back in 2015 with a passion for growing food and a love for being outdoors. Our original plan was actually to open a pizza shop—but we quickly realized we wanted to build a life around something we truly loved. We began farming on just one acre of leased land, and today we farm 60 acres that we’ll officially own by the end of this year. What a journey it’s been! Thank you to all of you who have supported us along the way. And thank you for eating locally and organically.

Tons of harvesting going on at Deep Roots Farm and it’s not even May! The greenhouses this year are really doing their thing. If you asked me a year ago- I’d say Greenhouses just never produce the way we need them too. At least not like in the field. But not this year- greenhouses are absolutely maxing out . The major difference this year was honing in on the soil samples. Working alongside an agronomist and really diving deeply into the world of agronomy this winter- reading books and listening to podcast and seminars - I think we figured it out. Our greenhouse levels of Phosphorus were through the roof (and still are very high) all in thanks to our farm-made compost. Don’t get me wrong - compost is great- but in smaller doses in my opinion. I didn’t add any more this year- only balanced minerals / and we are seeing instant results. When P levels are high- it makes it harder for your plant to uptake zinc and other micronutrients . So we increased the zinc across the 9 tunnels and balanced everything else out. And p**f! Crops ready to harvest 3 weeks after planting at this time of the year in an unheated tunnel is a total win! And they’re growing back for 3 and 4 cuts!
I know some farms use a ton of compost and have great results- and I’d say for the first few years we did- then it started to decline- I wasn’t adding other amendments an only compost- our potassium levels went super low, pH went up, and phosphorus went SOO high - and phosphorus is not very mobile in the soil- so there’s no real getting rid of it once it’s that high. But we learned to work around that.
Thanks for all of you who have followed us on our journey for the past 11 years. Thanks for supporting a local, organic , family farm- it means the world to us :)
