Our nursery team is keen on spotting interesting critters in the gardens..today Laurel spotted this beautiful Luna moth, that appears to have freshly emerged from its cocoon. Adult Luna moths are born without any functional mouth or digestive system and so do not feed. Instead they rely on their stored energy as they spend their brief 7 to 10 day adult life searching for a mate. If successful in finding a mate, a female Luna moth can lay up to 400 eggs! These huge moths are so special, and rely on native plants for their life cycle. Luna moth caterpillars feed on a variety of native trees and shrubs including:
Acer rubrum (Red maple)
Betula populifolia (Grey birch)
Betula papyrifera (Paper birch)
Carya glabra (Pignut hickory)
Carya illinoensis (Pecan nut)
Carya ovata (Shagbark hickory)
Castanea dentata (American chestnut)
Fagus grandifolia (American beech)
Juglans nigra (Black walnut)
Liquidambar styraciflua (sweetgum)
Liriodendron tulipifera (Tulip tree)
Nyssa sylvatica (Black gum)
Myrica pensylvanica (Northern bayberry)
Ostrya virginiana (American hophornbeam)
Prunus serotina (Black cherry)
Quercus alba (White oak)
Quercus macrocarpa (Bur oak)
Quercus rubra (Red oak)
Rhus glabra (winged sumac)
Rhus typhina (Staghorn sumac)
Tilia americana (American basswood)
