In the Vineyards
2024 December Updates
November proved to be the turning point in the autumn weather, with the arrival of much cooler temps and much needed rain. This helped push the vines towards settling in for their winter slumber. And now in December, with shorter, much cooler days and evenings, the vineyard is beginning to turn green as the ground cover begings to fill in and grow.
In the Barrel
A short take on the 2024 vintage. Fast & furious. 2024 will be remembered for a toasty summer, that brought everything to harvest is a short period of time. The upside to this was while everything was compressed. It also meant everything wrapped up quickly.
Winemaker's Blog
This newsletter represents the end of the first year of the new vineyard. The vines have done their main job which was to get established and grow. They made it thru a major wildfire, Deer encroachments and a very hot summer. All in all, I consider it a success. Keep in mind this vineyard block was meant to be a proof of concept. To take the learnings from it to apply to future vineyard blocks. So the vines have earned their well deserved winter slumber in which they will rest up & prepare for next spring.
Right now, time in the vineyard is spent with some very light pruning, tying back vines, quick check on the irrigation system and doing some light rock removal / repositioning. The rocky soil out here is great for vines, but a pain for equipment, & in general.... tidier.
Our new member to the JDV team, Vineyard dog Bogey has been doing a great job settling in and learning the ropes around here. Now that the days are cooler & shorter, & he's figured out the daily routine, he enjoys hanging out in front of the fireplace, continues to enjoy watching the Warriors play basketball. Bogey is living the good life.......
