I’m going to normalize something that apparently made the internet uncomfortable.
I plant, make, and preserve food for my family.
That’s it. That’s the whole sentence.
I shared that I don’t plant things we don’t eat, and the messages I got were wild. Apparently that makes me selfish, wasteful, and a terrible human because I could donate it, give it away, or feed the entire community.
And while I love the idea of that, let’s be honest for a second.
My time is worth something.
Planting, tending, harvesting, washing, preserving, cooking, storing, that is labor. Real labor. And right now, all I have the capacity for is feeding the people who live in my house. That doesn’t make me greedy. It makes me realistic.
We’ve somehow turned homesteading into this performative thing where if you’re not overproducing and giving everything away, you’re doing it wrong. Who tf started that?
It’s okay to grow food with the intention of serving only your family.
It’s okay to choose rest over obligation.
It’s okay to say “this season is about us.”
Maybe someday I’ll have the time, energy, and margin to do more. But today, feeding my people well is enough.
That should be enough for anyone.
If you need me, I will probably still be planting beets and not eating them, but you know who will, my chickens.
