A whole lot of nothing going on out here.

We’ve given up on trying to get Florence to raise her ram lamb. She’s doing a great job with the ewe lamb but her little boy is now a bottle baby. She was getting increasingly violent with her back legs trying to prevent him from nursing which was also negatively affecting the ewe lamb.

But - I am so lucky to have my incredible mom here for lambing. This is such a special time of year for us. She’s incredible. Not every mom is willing to wrestle a diarrhea covered ewe before her first cup of coffee or w**d your garden in the hot sun while you work your day job.

We are just over 1/3 of the way through lambing. 5 of our 12 pregnant ewes have lambed. It’s been a rough start but things seem to be settling a bit.

Jackie O I think will accept her ewe lamb and the grafted ram lamb from Anne. The jury is out on Florence. She realized if she lays down she can prevent her lambs from nursing so to be sure they’re getting enough to eat, I’ve been holding her up with a ratchet strap a few times a day. I spent most of the morning making plans turn her into lamb burgers.

Ruth is going a great job, Anne’s been such a great mom to her 2 other “chosen” babies, and Pippy gave birth to twins and is doing a great job with them.

We got everyone weighed and tagged, now we are on lamb watch for Eleanor, and Catherine’s starting to look like she might go soon.

Today was a wild ride! Twins, triplets, and a single. The mom of the single needs a bit of encouragement to accept it, and I made the executive decision to graft the least loved of the triplets onto her so both moms can raise doubles. We don’t have anyone due til the day after tomorrow, so hopefully we get these moms sorted and can start letting everyone out.

State of the ewes 5/5. Hoping to see 4 more lambs on the ground by tomorrow night. We will see how that shakes out.

Success! We will keep Florence in the headgate for another day at least to make sure her milk has passed through the ram lamb’s system and then see if she’s willing to accept him as her own given the choice. If not, back to the headgate to rethink her choices.

May seem a bit brutal but the other option is this lamb not having a ewe to mother him and ending up as someone else’s bottle baby. Bottle rams are notoriously dangerous when they grow up as well, so a bottle ram is basically a worst case scenario. Our first year, Ginger had to spend a week in the head gate before she accepted her lamb. I’m hoping Florence has a change of heart much more quickly than that.

Lamb watch has begun!

Obviously now the dam area is getting a bit overgrown and we need the cut down the trees that have popped up before they wreck the dam, but it’s nice to see the land starting to repair itself a bit.
