A big thank you to the vets at Owen County Animal Clinic. They are top-notch guys and gals with a great new facility. Tori, one of our Brown Swiss cows, was having some foot trouble, and they got her all fixed up.

Herdshares are available in Northern, KY and Georgetown; we have multiple drop-off locations. Carmel is one of our new cows that we bought from Apple-Core Jerseys. She has been fresh for two weeks and has adapted to our system very well. Our only regret is that we wish we had bought another one just like her.

Our barn cat had five kittens last night in the middle of the calf pen. Usually, cats find somewhere warm and hidden to give birth, but we have seen her snuggling and sleeping right by one calf’s side, so it must have felt like a safe spot. We rearranged all the calves to meet her motherly needs. 😆

We picked up a new farm today. The kids and I took soil samples and are eager to get started. I've heard a lot of old stories about this farm and all the alfalfa and brome hay it used to produce. There were still traces of brome grass on those ridges. One old farmer told me years ago that someone gambled it away in a back-room card game back in the late 1950s-60s. I love old stories like that. We hope to get lime down as soon as possible, and we will try to get our alfalfa sown this fall.

Those blessings just keep pouring out on our little milk herd. Carmel has just had her bull calf and all went well. I think I might just sit on this 5-gallon bucket and take it all in. If loving this is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Like that Randy Travis song, I'm digging up bones. We took a break from fixing fence the other day so the boys could do an archaeological dig on a dinosaur skeleton. It's really a cow that passed away from old age a while back, but I'll never tell them any differently.

We were really blessed today to add some good A2/A2 milk genetics to our herd. I cannot wait to work with these cows and build a herd out of them. It was overwhelming when I walked into the barn to look at the cows. There wasn’t a bad cow in the herd, and it was the most efficient run farm I have been to. The owner was a very humble person and very knowledgeable about cows. I soaked up every little thing I could learn from him. I love this business and the people I have met throughout the years. I hate to see the sun set on this farm.

Emma is not halter-broke, nor does she have registration papers. But I am super excited to get her bred back. She always has her work clothes on. She is the Charlie Daniels of our little milk herd. She hits those notes just right. Her udder is super clean, she is high in butter fat, she milks out really fast, and she has a good temperament. Our Jersey semen just came in the other day, and we're just waiting for her to come in heat. I'm just trying to fill Keefer Road with milk cows and some super Hereford momma beef cows like it was in the 1950s.

I want to give a big thank you to my Aunt Glena Simpson and Cousin Chris. On Saturday, we stopped by and got the last piece to finish our pipeline, a pulsator box and the pulsators. My Uncle Paul and Aunt Glena had put this pipeline in 1978. Chris said his dad had put it in so he could attend all of his basketball games, and it was his senior year. That was the year Grant County High won their eighth regional championship and went to the state tournament; they lost two games that year. I really enjoyed listening to Chris reminisce about the days of old. In a perfect world, this barn would still be full of Holstein cows, and the milk truck would still be stopping here.

Thirty gallons of our best home brew headed down south this morning. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the grass is greening up, and the cows are out grazing on it. The coffee, I think, even tasted a little better this morning. If I didn't have any bills, I swear I would do this for free.
