Back on June 19th Dolum Estates created a near feeding frenzy nationwide when they told industry insiders that they needed to raise some cash and were closing out 2 of their w**es - one of them being their 2023 Dolum Estates Cabernet Sauvignon.

In the closeout game you rarely get everything you want. Either the price is unreal and they have like 5 bottles left, or they have a ton of inventory and have not aligned their price yet with reality.

In this particular case, there were 5,000 cases available and the price was insane.

It took us 12 days to get the sample w**e in and tasted - and folks, one taste is all it took. It was go time.

That said, only 1,800 cases of the 5,000 were left 😂 - but we bought them all.

This one is their California Cabernet: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from small sub-districts across select Napa Valley and Sonoma sites.

I’m gonna go hyperbolic for a minute and just tell you this may be the best sub $15 Cabernet we have ever offered. I’m not sure it is worth the $60 the w**ery charges for it but it’s dang close. For $15 it is absolutely absurd. I paid $6.29 for a drink at Starbucks yesterday. Not some fancy drink with like 36 instructions. Just a coffee and milk on ice.

So you can imagine how excited I get when I can purchase an entire bottle of rosé, from southern France, for just $1 more.

Pâle Comme la Lune is a new arrival into our rosé lineup and it fits our business model perfectly. Insanely delicious and unbeatable value.

The name of the w**e, Pâle Comme la Lune (Pale as the moon), also happens to accurately describe what you get in the glass.

Pour a glass and you'll see what I mean. Barely pink, with a faint bluish tint at the edges. Almost silver. Like moonlight on water, which is exactly what's on the front of the bottle.

So how do you make a rosé this pale? Two things.

First, they pick at night. The grapes come in cool, before the southern French sun can warm them up, which keeps the juice fresh and protects it from oxidation.

Second, direct pressing. The grapes go straight into the press, and the juice comes off the skins almost immediately. All the color in rosé comes from skin contact, so less contact means a paler, more delicate w**e. Then it ferments cold, around 60 degrees, to lock in the aromatics.

The vineyards sit at the foot of the Montagne Noire in the south of France, facing the Pyrenees, anywhere from about 160 to 1,600 feet up. Atlantic air comes in from the west, Mediterranean air from the east, over clay-limestone soils and sandstone terraces. The w**e is a blend that includes Grenache, and it's bottled in the little village of Rieux-Minervois.

You've heard me opine before: rosé was never meant to be expensive. No oak, no years of aging, from the vineyard to your table within months. This is rosé priced the way rosé was always supposed to be priced.

Question is...am I taking more than one case home this week? I mean - it is supposed to be warm this week!

This Saturday is my favorite event of the ENTIRE year.

Our Annual Caymus Cabernet Blind Tasting!

And this year we're changing it up a bit. Given we've been doing these now for over 15 years, we have a long list of past champions that are still crushing it.

So this Saturday it will be Caymus against 7 past winners of this tasting...all blind. A tournament of champions if you will!

Caymus Cabernet is one of the hottest selling w**es in any given year, but if we placed it in a lineup with less expensive offerings, and in this instance less expensive offerings that WAY outdrink their price point - could you pick it out? Would it still be your favorite?

We're going to find out this weekend!

I mean, a Ducati is supposed to go faster than a bicycle, and a $70 w**e is supposed to taste better than a $20 one. Right? Well, maybe not. A w**e's success isn't measured in MpH, it's measured in the taste that is transferred from the glass to your mouth. If you don't know the price, can't see the label, and can't hear someone waxing poetic in your ear about the w**e's "score," then all that is left is the juice and your taste buds. It's a scary proposition for any w**emaker. That's why you have marketing departments that design catchy labels, create campaigns to build a w**e's image, and spend all of their time and energy essentially trying to convince consumers that a w**e is great. The problem is that you can't out "market" a blind tasting.

Which is why we're playing "Find the Caymus Cabernet" this Saturday. The format is simple really. Eight w**es will all be tasted blind on our tasting machines each at a cost of $1.00. ($8 to get through the whole tasting) One of them will be the 2023 Caymus Cabernet and the others will be an assortment of w**es at every price point from a number of different regions. All you have to do is taste and pick your favorite. Yes, that's right, your favorite. If that's the Caymus, then great, if not, well that's OK too. You may be surprised as to what your favorites actually are.

$9.99 is my sweet spot. My guilty pleasure type of w**e. I LOVE finding w**e I enjoy for less than $10.

I went with my son and a group of dads and kids from his class to Cleveland last weekend for the Panthers game (not the ideal outcome). Prices of things when you travel border on the absurd.

I can get a diet coke at Costco for like $0.25 a can. That same can at the hotel in Cleveland cost $5. It's the same product for the love.
