These 3 Chestnut Trees Tell the Story of This Year’s Harvest

I’ve been following three chestnut trees through the season — Perry, Yi-Xian Good Flavor, and Shing — and they’re giving me a pretty good look at how this year’s crop is shaping up.
The burs are getting close, the nuts are starting to drop, and harvest is finally here. 🌰
Which of the three do you think will end up producing the best crop?

I finally did it — I passed the FAA Part 107 exam and now have my Remote Pilot Certificate. 🚁

I wanted to add better drone footage to the channel so I can show the chestnut orchard, food plots, habitat projects, hunting property, and the rest of the farm from a completely different perspective.

In this video I talk about how I studied, what the test was like, how I used YouTube and ChatGPT for practice questions, and I give a first look at the new DJI Mini 5 Pro.

Now that the test is behind me, the fun part starts!
You’ll be seeing a lot more aerial footage in future videos.

I Bought My First Diesel Truck - 2026 F-350 Tremor HO

After years of driving Toyota Tundras, I finally made a pretty big change.

I picked up a new **2026 Ford F-350 Lariat Tremor with the 6.7L High Output Power Stroke diesel**.

The Tundras treated me extremely well, but between hauling equipment, pulling trailers, farm work, and some long hunting trips out West, I decided it was time to step up to a 1-ton diesel.

I’ll be sharing plenty about the truck here — what I like, what I don’t, towing, hauling, maintenance, upgrades, and how it actually works for the things I do around the farm and hunting properties.

And yes… selling the Tundra was a little painful. 😂...and so are the Diesel prices 😂

Checking back in on Yi-Xian Good Flavor, Perry, and Shing as the 2026 crop develops — plus the GardePro camera caught a gray fox, deer, and Chester at the groundhog hole.

11 years ago, this was bare ground and a pile of small chestnut seedlings. Was it worth it?

I planted this orchard from seed back in 2014, and in this video I walk through it 11 years later to show what actually happened — the good, the bad, the mistakes, and what I’d do differently.

I filmed this in the middle of winter, which actually makes it easier to see the structure of the trees, spacing, growth, and some of the decisions that worked…and some that didn’t.

If you’re thinking about planting chestnuts, improving hunting property, managing rural land, or just curious what more than a decade of growth looks like, this is the part you usually don’t get to see.

🌳 I cover:

What surprised me most
When the orchard finally began to feel established
Mistakes and setbacks
What mattered most over 11 years
Where the orchard is headed next

This orchard started from seed in 2014. There’s still a long way to go.

After more than a decade of growing chestnut trees, there are definitely a few things I would do differently if I were starting this orchard all over again.

Thank you!

Some of these mistakes cost me trees. Others cost me time, money, and a lot of unnecessary work. And a few took me years to even realize were mistakes.

In this video, I walk through some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from growing and maintaining a chestnut orchard, including:

• Why I would not rely on tree tubes the same way again
• Why I should have removed blight-susceptible trees sooner
• Why the zero-turn mower turned out to be a much better orchard-maintenance tool than the tractor
• Why I’ve become much more selective about which genetics and varieties deserve space in the orchard
• How my approach to chestnut growing has changed after years of trial and error

If you’re thinking about planting chestnuts, already have a few trees growing, or you’re building a larger orchard of your own, hopefully some of these lessons can save you a little time and frustration.

I also added some relaxing orchard B-roll near the end with my Lake Erie Chestnuts song, and I reveal the winner of the groundhog naming contest before the video wraps up.

Thanks for watching and following along.
