🌱🐖 Let’s Talk Pasture-Raised Pigs 🐖🌱

At Butterfield Family Farms TX, we take pride that our Kune Kunes are pasture-raised for many different reasons:

1. Animal Well-Being.
Kune Kunes crave companionship and the ability to roam freely. Having access to open spaces and fresh pasture, leads to a not only healthier life, but also a less stressful life compared to those of confined farming. Pigs root up ground, which can prevent regrowth of fresh pasture. Rotating their living space, is crucial for the health of your pig and your land.
2. Environmental Impact.
From the pasture standpoint, properly managed pasture systems can enhance soil health, promote biodiversity, and reduce erosion. The natural fertilization from pigs can contribute to nutrient cycling and soil enrichment.
3. Nutritional Benefits.
Pork from pasture-raised pigs often contain higher levels of beneficial nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins E and D, and antioxidants. These nutrients are brought from the varied diet that includes grasses, roots, and insects, which is more nutrient dense and diverse than standard feed.
4. Superior Flavor.
Many consumers find that pasture-raised pork has a superior flavor and texture. Attributed to the pigs’ varied diet and more active lifestyle, pasture-raised pork is often described as more tender and flavorful.
5. Antibiotic Use.
Pasture-raised pigs often require less antibiotics due to their healthier living conditions, lower stress levels, and natural diet, which is beneficial in combating antibiotic resistance and building up the pigs natural immune system making them more resilient to diseases. Pasture-raised pigs are also less likely to get parasites, which we combat with more natural anti-parasitic methods.
6. Ethical Considerations.
Pasture-raised pork aligns with the values of humane and ethical treatment of animals, appealing to consumers concerned with animal welfare.

🧄 Garlic Scapes 🧄

Garlic scapes are flowering stalks that emerge from hard neck garlic varieties. Garlic scapes are typically harvested in late spring to early summer before they have a chance to flower and before the garlic bulb is harvested. Garlic scapes are harvested before the bulb fully matures to encourage the plant to direct its energy into developing a larger, more robust garlic bulb rather than producing flowers and seeds. Removing the scapes helps ensure a better yield of garlic bulbs.

Garlic scapes are a versatile culinary ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes such as: scape pickles, pestos, stir-fries, soups, and salads, offering a milder garlic flavor compared to the garlic bulb. Their tender texture and vibrant green color add both visual appeal and a fresh, garlicky taste to meals. The texture of garlic scapes is tender and somewhat crunchy, similar to asparagus or green beans.

To preserve the freshness of the garlic scape, place them in a cup of fresh water.

🌿 Cornish Cross chickens are a hybrid breed, the result of crossbreeding Cornish chickens and White Rock chickens. This hybridization produces chickens that grow exceptionally fast and efficiently, making them one of the most commonly raised breeds for meat production worldwide. In fact, Cornish Cross chickens are typically ready for processing in as little as 6 to 8 weeks, thanks to their rapid growth rate and high feed conversion efficiency. Cornish Cross chickens have a unique ability to convert feed into muscle mass at a remarkably efficient rate. These chickens have been selectively bred to prioritize muscle growth, resulting in a high meat-to-bone ratio. As a result, Cornish Cross chickens are prized for their large, tender, and flavorful meat. 🐣

🌿 Given this unexpected cold weather here in Texas, did you know that:

1. Chickens have a unique adaptation called “piloerection” (AKA goosebumps), where they fluff up their feathers to trap warm air close to their bodies, acting as a natural insulation against the cold.
2. Chickens also have a higher body temperature than humans, typically around 105 degrees Fahrenheit, which helps them tolerate colder temperatures.
3. Chickens have a special adaptation in their feet called a “rete mirabile,” which minimizes heat loss by cooling the blood before it circulates back to the body.
4. Chickens are more susceptible to frostbite on their combs and wattles during extremely cold weather, so farmers may apply petroleum jelly to these areas as a protective measure.

Take the time to provide your chickens with a cozy shelter as the weather fluctuates, and they will repay your care by remaining healthy and productive. 🥚
