2026 is International Year of the Woman Farmer and in celebration of that, ODA is thrilled to shine a spotlight on Oregon women whose hard work powers our communities and beyond.

Meet Maud Powell, who is a writer, farmer, speaker, facilitator, and professor in Oregon State University’s Small Farms Program. Drawing on her own experience with drought and climate-related challenges in farming, Powell conducts workshops across Oregon and the United States for individuals affected by climate change. These workshops are among the first of their kind and have received national recognition.

Just Released! New Episode of For the Love of Farming - Cully Neighborhood Farm and Slow Hand Farm with Josh Volk

In this episode we spend time with Josh Volk of Cully Neighborhood Farm https://cullyneighborhoodfarm.com/ in Portland. The conversation begins in a fitting way - meeting down in his basement with Josh talking while catching up on seeding under a bright light. That moment captures who Josh is: a farmer grounded in the work itself, even as he shares ideas that have quietly supported the small farm community in Oregon and beyond.

On less than an acre, Josh feeds his community through a small urban CSA, with many members walking or biking to pick up their shares. His CSA is intentionally designed with smaller portions, making it easier for individuals and families to enjoy fresh produce without waste. Alongside farming, Josh has written Compact Farms and Build Your Own Farm Tools, and continues to consult and support growers through Slow Hand Farm https://slowhandfarm.com/ — always keeping one foot firmly in the soil.

Recorded in Spring 2026, this episode explores why Josh chose a part‑time farming model for balance, how he makes crop decisions on a tight urban scale, and what keeps him rooted in agriculture after nearly three decades. For Josh, farming is about the people, the reset each season, and the grounding rhythm that keeps him connected year after year.
