The kleshas are one of those yoga teachings that can feel ancient and philosophical until you realize they are quietly running the show in everyday life.

In the Yoga Sutras, the kleshas are described as the five root causes of suffering. The mental and emotional patterns that cloud our perception, pull us out of presence, and keep us identified with the parts of ourselves that are always grasping, resisting, fearing, or trying to control.

Avidya is wrong knowing. When we mistake the temporary for the permanent, the impure as pure, or forget that we are more than the changing circumstances of our lives.

Asmita is egoism. It is when we believe our thoughts, roles, titles, personality, or identity are the whole truth of who we are.

Raga is attachment. It is the part of us that clings to pleasure, comfort, approval, certainty, or the version of life we don’t want to lose.

Dvesha is aversion. The instinct to avoid pain, discomfort, grief, hard conversations, or anything that asks us to stretch beyond what feels familiar.

Abhinivesha is the fear of death, change, endings, and loss. It is the deep survival-level fear that can make us grip tightly to what is already shifting.

And this is why yoga is so much deeper than movement.

The practice is not only asking, “Can I hold the pose?”
It’s asking, “Can I notice what I cling to? Can I see where I resist? Can I soften the identity I keep defending? Can I meet change with a little more trust?”

When you begin to notice the kleshas, you start to create space between who you are and the patterns that have been running your life.
That space is where the practice begins to free you.
