Mary's Green Gate Farm

Mary's Green Gate Farm I have lived on GREEN GATE FARM for 33 years. I do not spray Herbicides or Pesticides. I also put up Bat boxes, bird boxes and wood duck boxes.

I use composted cow, chicken and horse manure to fertilize our vegetable crops, berries, orchard fruit and pastures. I encourage beneficial insects with bee houses and the planting of flowers in my garden to attract them. I provide housing for skunk families because of the benefit they provide the farm. (I have never been “sprayed” and have walked by them out foraging for food all the time) Our Ba

rns have Barn Owl nest boxes and we see babies every year. A Barn owls diet is 98% rodent which eliminates any need to use poisons around our hay storage. We have perches for various hawks which help to keep the vole and field rodent populations in check. They are all beneficial and they make my hard work a pleasure just to have them share the farm with me.

I am not sure everyone is aware that I maintain my farm as a wildlife oasis. Trees are planted in hedge rows to provide food , no pesticide or herbicides are ever used to contaminate the food source by the skunks squirrels and bobcats. In 2025 the our bird species count hit 100 for the first time all verified by Audubon Society members doing the Bird count. I have owl boxes in every barn , gray squirrel nest boxes , bat boxes, and multiple bird boxes. I would like to put up more boxes, especially for the gray squirrels because their habitat is greatly compromised by non-native species.. the cost of keeping up the boxes and buying new boxes is actually a problem for me. If there’s anyone out there who’s handy and would like to volunteer making some wood boxes for the wildlife . I would be glad to pay for the wood involved..
Also, if there’s an avid bird watcher, who would enjoy taking a stroll along my slough to see the birds that live here please contact me. I would be glad to share what I have created with others..

I love my farm and I spend every minute making it a great place for my animals. Please meet Midge. She was born on my farm. She will be 17 years old in April. Today she had her 17th calf. All have been born healthy. She is in my farm stand to give her time to enjoy her new son, interesting enough her daughter Maggie is in the stall next to her with her son.
If you have extra bananas, the riper the better, both cows love them and will take them right out of your hand.

Because of the weather, we kept this mother and baby inside the barn, but now they are outside and are enjoying the fresh air and beautiful sky. Mother Dawn gave birth to the heifer Sunshine, on February 8, 2026 .

This is a little infomation to explain why my farm does not have many eggs in the winter.

To maintain consistent egg production, chickens require a minimum of 14 hours of light per day. While 14 hours is the threshold to stimulate and sustain laying, they reach their peak production potential at 16 hours of light per day. When natural daylight drops below 12 hours, egg production typically slows down significantly or ceases entirely as the hen's reproductive cycle adjusts.
In Commercial production the chickens are given artificial light all year long to keep them producing.

Days are getting longer, and my chickens have begun producing again and I do have eggs available in the stand. You may call me to check on availability 541-740-0311

Haley was 34 years old . My grandchildren learned to ride on him. He went hunting with my husband and brought him home safe to me every year. Small children could ride on him , walk under him , they could feed him treats and brush him. I could let him loose on the farm and he never went out the gate. 34 is 95 of our years and he showed it . Tuesday night he was showing alot of pain. We gave him pain medication. Yesterday his Vet of 32 years came out and his heart was in a- fib. He was in a lot of pain and stumbling around. She told me what I did not want to here. He was able to walk out to the field where his mother rests and Ann put him to sleep.

Invasive populations of weeds, birds, squirrels, frogs and fish can destroy the things we love about Oregon the most. Pay attention, no matter where you are. Take a picture on your phone and double check with somebody who can answer the question when you see an animal you don’t recognize as being one of our own.

On November 18, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed a Chinese mitten crab was caught in the Willamette River near Portland. This invasive crab spends most of its life in freshwater but reproduces in saltwater. Its burrowing habits can harm dikes, levees, and stream banks by increasing erosion and damaging associated systems (such as flood control and water supply). Chinese mitten crab also both eats and outcompetes native species and can carry harmful pathogens.

We are urging Washingtonians to be vigilant and report any suspected sightings of this prohibited aquatic invasive species. The crab is about 3-inches wide, and their outer claws appear hairy and mitten-like. They also have four spines on either side of their eyes. To learn more and report sightings, please visit: https://invasivespecies.wa.gov/priorityspecies/mitten-crab/

See the comments section for the full news release from ODFW and additional resources from Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife. For questions about the Chinese mitten crab in Oregon, contact the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

One of our employees looked up and took this great picture across the back pasture. On the right side of the rainbow it passes the edge of the Osprey nesting platform . The tall tree to the left is where we offen see the bald Eagle sitting.
