In the middle of August we welcomed this cute bull calf. I silently prayed for a heifer from this mating but you don’t always get what you want… He is the grandson of the terrific 88x and the son of Gold Rush. When I saw the calf was a bull I immediately texted my husband… “ummm can we raise bull?” Normally we band our bull calves immediately but we are going to give this guy some time to grow up before we make that decision! I’m excited to see what his future holds? Will he be Orions Gold or another beef steer… only time will tell. 😏

And just like that we have our first fall calf. Not sure why August is considered fall calving when it’s going to be 98 this week. Welcome baby Pegasus, daughter of Anem. Can we keep 5 heifers this year?!?

I’m actually not sure how it’s possible to work a full time job, run a small beef herd, keep my horse in competition shape, take care of our garden, and run my instagram…. So since we are literally a week away from our “fall” calves I thought it was time to introduce the rest of our spring calves! We got three Hereford heifers; Cassiopeia, Delphinus, and Vega, who we will be keeping to expand our herd. And a cute speckled/Hereford bull calf Altair!

This weekend Atticus took Montana out for another spin at the Oregon Spring Classic in Salem. I’m so excited that she behaved so well compared to her last outing! She’s grown up so much. 🥲 We can’t wait for all the summer fairs!

Remember Quasar? Well we thought she needed a brother so a week after she was born we brought home a Jersey/Angus cross bull and grafted him onto Raya. We named him Zwicky after “I Zwicky 18” a dwarf irregular galaxy, much smaller than the Milky Way, located about 59 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. Raya took some convincing but now the trio is doing great and they’ve moved out of the loafing shed and into the pasture!
