Everyone keeps asking what’s in our chicken feed mix… so here’s the recipe and why we use it. 👀🐔
When we started fermenting our feed, we also added a blend of herbs and spices to the mix. 🌿
We add this custom blend to every 50 lb bag of feed before fermenting:
The recipe includes:
🌿 1 cup coarse black pepper (3.7 oz)
🌿 1 cup cayenne pepper (3.7 oz)
🌿 ½ cup garlic powder (3.4 oz)
🌿 1 cup red chili pepper flakes (2.4 oz)
🌿 2½ cups oregano (2 oz)
🌿 ¼ cup ground flaxseed (0.8 oz)
Mix ingredients in a gallon size ziplock bag and store until you are ready to ok use.
🌿 Oregano – contains naturally occurring compounds with antimicrobial properties and is commonly used to support flock wellness.
🧄 Garlic Powder – traditionally used to support gut health, discourage certain external parasites, and help reduce manure odor.
⚫ Black Pepper – contains piperine, which may support digestion and nutrient utilization.
🌶️ Cayenne Pepper & Red Chili Flakes – contain capsaicin, which may help discourage rodents and other pests from feeding on stored feed.
🌱 Ground Flaxseed – provides omega-3 fatty acids and may help increase the omega-3 content of eggs.
This isn’t a magic mix or a substitute for veterinary care - This is the blend we’ve chosen for our flock here at Hidden Acres, and it’s become part of our fermented feed routine. ❤️🌿
