About us…

We are the DeBruler Family: Brian & Carrie, our three babies and Molly, our sweet Labrador. We are Tennessee transplants originally from Indiana, now living and growing proudly in Sumner County. If you had asked us what we would be doing with our lives only a few years ago, we would have had a very different answer. The changes have been in both location and ideology. We asked ourselves: “What do we want our life to be?”. So we let ourselves begin to dream and the answer we came to is this: authenticity. We want to engage fully with our neighbors and with our community. We want to love the people around us and the earth. So we bought five beautiful acres in Cottontown, Tennessee with the dream of raising our children and our food with lots of dirt, sunshine and love.

Our journey…

I began raising chickens mostly as a hobby for our family. I believe that you are what you eat, so we feed our family accordingly. The first batch of chicks arrived and we were completely unprepared for how much we would love them. The plan was to raise new birds each year; nurturing new chicks to maturity, enjoying eggs for a season and then sending them to freezer camp. We made the mistake of naming them all and carrying them around like babies. Now we have real love for our chickens and their beautiful, delicious eggs. They are so much more to us than sustenance and we want to share their goodness with our community! Thus we have become Cottontown Farms- a small scale egg producer located in the heart of Sumner County. We intend to nourish our family and the families around us.

Our flock…

Cottontown Farms hosts a variety of heritage breed chickens. We set out from the beginning to support species of birds in decline as specified by the Livestock Conservancy. We believe that biodiversity is beneficial to our environment and supersedes productivity. What that means for us is beautiful chickens and an egg basket full of color! Most people do not know that different breeds of chickens produce different colors of egg shells. Our chickens produce light brown, dark brown, speckled, pink, blue and green eggs- something you will not find in typical grocery store egg cartons. This debunks the myth that conventional eggs are white and “organic” eggs are brown. We delight in our variety of egg colors and we hope this helps families explore and enjoy food diversity.

There is a difference on the inside as well. Quality. Our eggs are gathered daily from hens that move freely on five acres of grass pasture. Our pastured hens are completely free to peck, scratch, run, bathe and socialize as they choose. Our hens eat a diet of bugs and small ground wildlife as well as being supplemented free choice by certified organic grains from Windy Acres Farm in Orlinda, Tennessee. When you crack open one of our eggs your will immediately notice the bright orange yolk and the high rise of the yolk. This comes from chickens who eat a diverse omnivorous diet and results in a rich, buttery flavor. There is no contest between an old, production egg and a farm fresh, pastured, heritage egg.
