Today marks the date that we traditionally stop worrying about frost in the vineyard. We almost made it without any damage.
Bud break in some sections of the vineyard was almost a month early this year, making us especially concerned that a late frost could lead to crop loss. While this wasn't a very hard freeze and we don't have extensive damage it does mean we will have a little less than average crop yeild for the Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Sangiovese. The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are the last to bud and have little to no frost damage.
You can see the healthy green growth and the brown shriveled growth where the frost sat on the vine for just a couple hours about 1.5 weeks back. That's all it takes to kill the tender new vines.
We left the cover crop until now to help fight frost and it does seem to have made a difference, but really there isn't much we can do in these scenarios. The beautiful crimson clover is part of the protective cover crop that remains.
Back to farming!

We spent our entire weekend sniffing bungholes!
Every winter we take inventory of all the wine barrels in our cellar; how they smell, their age, any leaks and repairs needed, and if we have enough space for the new oak barrels. This year once we identified a few to removed we set to dismantling them to use as decor.
