Grassroots Bison Ranch, LLC

Grassroots Bison Ranch, LLC Grass-fed Bison Meat, Grass-fed Piedmontese Beef & Pastured Chicken- Raised by our family, for yours.

We are committed to raising 100% grass-fed and grass-finished bison, and pastured chickens- all allowed a natural growth cycle. We promise to respect the created animal, and the created land on which we are raising them. We do not use hormones for breeding or growth promotion, antibiotics, feed additives or grain. We do not use chemical fertilizers, chemical fungicides, or chemical insect sprays.

We believe that freedom of movement is critical for the health of our animals, and results in healthier, tastier products for the consumer. In our aim to provide our animals with the best nutrition through pasture management and rotational grazing, we are also healing the soil on our property by planting deep-rooted forbs, legumes and grasses, which will decrease compaction, increase the drought tolerance of the vegetation, attract and support pollinators (bees, butterflies, beetles, hummingbirds), and allow for the symbiotic relationship of the plants with mycorrhizal fungi. We are also committed to continuing our learning to ensure we always provide our customer with the best and healthiest product possible… from our farm to your table.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Our friends and customers at the ranch are among the many blessings we acknowledge in our life today! I know we haven't kept you up to date about the ranch goings on, but we are definitely still here and the animals are all doing great! We have spent the year growing our herds (wait until you meet our Rubia Gallega beef babies!), and trying to be intentional about meaningful time with our kids...time is flying faster than ever, so we are doing our best to pay attention🙏
God bless your Thanksgiving with those you love!

For all of our Glenda fans... look how great she is doing! She is on the far right pictured here with her (still grumpy) Mama "Big Red" and her newest sister Toto. Big Red has continued to calve a large calf every year (her oldest daughter Dorothy, who birthed her own daughter this year, is cut out of the picture on the left side). These bison ladies are HUGE and healthy, and we continue to be thankful that we took a chance on Glenda and saved her leg, and in doing so her life! 🦬❤
Our own daughters wanted to haul their horses to the ranch this week to practice rounding up the cows. When Big Red saw us pull in she went absolutely crazy, and none of the other bison seemed to care. I finally realized that she was reacting to the horse trailer... she must have remembered us taking Glenda from her (twice) and putting her in one just like it to haul her to OSU when she broke her leg last year. So it seems that even bison can hold on to their trauma... poor Big Red. She paced and grunted and snorted and she was not at peace until we finally pulled out the drive. I hope she is not still plotting her revenge. 😅

Seeing the trefoil pushing up through a bison patty brought to mind the inspiring words of Dinos Christianopoulos in the face of adversity…
“ They tried to bury us. They did not know we were seeds.”
Isn’t it interesting that a seed -with all the potential to grow into a beautiful plant -can sit dormant for years doing seemingly nothing until it is one day buried and fertilized (crapped on)… a process that finally releases its potential and allows it to grow and bloom.

One of you must have needed to hear this today ♥️

I hope that you have had an amazing adventure or two this summer. I have missed sharing ours with you; as is typical, ranch life has been full of them! Meet our latest adventure…baby Nico, born July 8th. Nico had trouble figuring out how to suck when he was born, and had quite the grump for a mama (despite her name being Honey); so we had to help him out. He resides in one of the horse stalls for now, which of course Naomi has equipped with her hammock so she can keep him company. Nico was quickly adopted by the dogs, and the kids have tried to sneak him into their bedrooms. “Can you train a calf to use a litter box? “ has definitely been asked. Yesterday Nico took off sprinting around the yard during exercise, and for the first time most of us couldn’t keep up… our 200 pound five-week-old "wittle guy" is going to have to move back to the pasture soon. In the meantime we will continue to enjoy all of the love, head butts, frolics, personality and snuggles he has to offer. ❤
