UPDATE: DOWNTOWN SQUARE UTILITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT AS OF OCTOBER 20, 2026
💧 On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, around the area of the current construction on Floyd Street (between Pace Street and Elm Street), there will be a water service interruption starting at 3 AM. Water service is scheduled to be restored by 7 AM unless unforeseen circumstances are encountered.💧
▶All downtown businesses and government offices will remain open during their normal business hours. Access to businesses within and around the construction area will continue to be maintained.
Crews are working to complete the water system improvements along Floyd Street within the construction area between Pace and Elm Streets.
🔸LAST WEEK (OCTOBER 12-16, 2026)
During the week of October 12th, construction crews completed the connection of the new water main and made the final preparations necessary to begin transferring existing water services to the new infrastructure.
🔸WEEK OF OCTOBER 19-23, 2026
Crews will focus on connecting individual water services to the new water main and taking the old water main out of service. These activities represent another important step toward completing the underground utility improvements in this section of downtown.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21st: There will be temporary water service interruptions in the area of current construction (Floyd Street between Pace and Elm Streets although it may impact businesses/buildings beyond this closure) as individual connections are made beginning at 3 AM. The City and its contractors will work to coordinate these activities and minimize disruptions to affected customers.
🔸LOOKING AHEAD
Over the next couple of weeks, crews will continue completing any remaining utility connections and preparing the work area for the next phase of construction.
The existing road closure along Floyd Street, between Pace Street and Elm Street, will remain in place during the current construction activities. The plan is to briefly move to a section of Elm Street once construction in the current area is complete. Any upcoming changes to traffic patterns or road closures will be communicated as plans are finalized.
Occasionally, crews may be working on sidewalks directly in front of businesses. When this occurs, accommodations will be made to provide customers, employees, and business owners with safe access to their destinations. Contractor personnel will be available to assist pedestrians in navigating around active work areas when necessary.
🔸SAFETY REMINDERS
For everyone's safety, motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to observe the following precautions:
🚗Follow all posted detour signs, road closures, and temporary traffic control devices.
🚶🏾Use designated sidewalks and pedestrian access routes whenever possible. Follow the directions of construction personnel when navigating near active work zones.
❌Avoid entering or crossing active construction areas, even when work does not appear to be underway.
🚧Be mindful of construction equipment, changing conditions, and personnel working in the area.
🔸DOWNTOWN EVENTS AND PLANNED ACTIVITIES
All downtown events and festivities will continue as scheduled. Construction activities are being coordinated to minimize impacts on events and activities. Should any changes to scheduled events become necessary, the City's Tourism & Downtown Department will provide the appropriate updates.
