Caribou finally went into labor about 7:30 pm today. Like everything Caribou, she took her time! At 9:30 we decided that it maybe an overnight thing so went inside to watch her in the cameras. We saw her with something coming out about 10:30 so I went right back out, but let Dorsey sleep. I called him about midnight when Caribou looked like she was in trouble! Pushing hard but nothing, just like last time she had babies! I was determined not to wait and see this time, and lose a baby. Yes, I was already gloved up and found one leg and an ear. Baby was positioned with head back! It was so hard to turn that poor baby around so that I could find the nose and possibly the other front leg! It seemed like forever and I was sure it would not make it, but it was alive when I pulled her out and she squeaked! We had to work on her for quite a bit to get her breathing, but with Caribou’s help, she finally was able to breathe on her own. She is so tiny and skinny. We then had to focus on the next baby who was coming in breech! I reached in and got only tail! Then I found a back leg, that I had to fold out so that he could come out without rupturing his mom. Once I got one leg straight, he came out and Caribou was so excited to meet him! Before you know it, he was up on his feet looking for milk, but little girl was not. We made sure that he was able to get some milk from mom and tried the girl with no luck. I sent Dorsey to bed because one of us needed to wake up tomorrow to take care of things and I watched Caribou and Godiva cleaning the babies and encouraging them to nurse. We got some colostrum from mom and tried to give to the little girl with a syringe. She is not doing well and still can’t stand while her brother is running all over the place. I decided to get more milk from Caribou to feed girl when I heard a baby screaming! Caribou had laid on top of the baby girl! That was it, she is now inside with me until she can walk. I have to feed her every 2 hours so not much sleep tonight. We are still not convinced that Caribou doesn’t have more babies in there though. Only 2 babies? And one was not even a lb, the boy was maybe 1.5 lbs. The placenta was already coming out when I left, but they can have 2 placentas. I’m still waiting and watching on the barn cam for more babies. Caribou will never have to go through this again as she has a new pet home as soon as we can get her babies on bottles, in about 2 weeks.
