Just went to a memorial service for my nearest neighbor, a gem of a woman in her early eighties whose contributions to the local community and broader region have been remarkably extensive. Her leadership and kindness are deeply missed, her life of public service and land stewardship profoundly inspiring. I started leasing her ranch several months ago. As many of the old-timers around my rural ranching neighborhood have passed on, I’m starting to realize that the mantle of being an elder is passing to my generation now. Feels like a big responsibility. I hope we can rise to fill the big shoes of people like Susan.

We sorted some fat steers out to go to the processor, then moved the herd to fresh pasture. Dear old Django hobbled out to join us. He’s 13 years old and can barely climb up the couple of steps to the porch, but his incredible border collie devotion to herding overcame the infirmity of old age to compel his tottering legs to one last glorious cattle drive. What an amazing creature❤️

The Western Colorado Soil Health and Food and Farm Forum conference in Montrose drew a great crowd of attendees the last couple of days. I presented a workshop on electric fencing. Felt great to give as well as receive. This slide from one of the keynote speakers sums it up!

All in a day’s work!
- Delivering a cooler of beef to the local health food store I noticed this tableau.
- Then passed by this painted wall. Such a cool little town!
- Then mounted up to sort a couple beeves out of the herd for the next round of Sunshine Beef!

One of the small ditches that brings water out of a mountain stream down to a ranch I lease had a stretch of it piped this late summer. A portion of the ditch that contoured across a steep rocky slope had slid out a few years ago. It was repaired but continued to leak dangerously. So now that whole section has been piped with funding provided by the Bureau of Reclamation. To mitigate the loss of riparian habitat along the old ditch, the project grant mandates habitat restoration somewhere else within the watershed. This is a snippet of what that looks like. A handful of ranchers spending a day planting native shrubs to help restore and diversify the riparian cottonwood forest along the North Fork River. ranching

I’m honored to be the steward of about a half mile stretch of Smith Fork Creek. We grazed this meadow in June but fenced off the creek to let the trees and brush grow thicker. It’s looking good on this beautiful fall day!

Sometimes a cowboy’s got to go to Washington to lobby for what he believes in. Public land conservation in Gunnison County! I joined a grassroots stakeholder working group 10 years ago as a representative for Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. Now we’re preparing to introduce legislation to accomplish the goal! Plus enjoying incredible Laotian and Ethiopian dinners out on the streets. Was great to get off the ranch for a few days!
