Just went to a memorial service for my nearest neighbor, a gem of a woman in her early eighties whose contributions to the local community and broader region have been remarkably extensive. Her leadership and kindness are deeply missed, her life of public service and land stewardship profoundly inspiring. I started leasing her ranch several months ago. As many of the old-timers around my rural ranching neighborhood have passed on, I’m starting to realize that the mantle of being an elder is passing to my generation now. Feels like a big responsibility. I hope we can rise to fill the big shoes of people like Susan.
