SSFR Miss Jasmine Interception — “Jazzy” ❤️🐴

Sometimes the horses who find their way into our lives become so much more than we ever planned for.

Jazzy came into our lives because of how much we wanted her mamma, Rainy. You might think that makes her an afterthought, but you would be very wrong! 😂❤️

This bundle of joy has been bringing laughter, lighthearted surprises, and smiles from day one.

The truth? I never intended to keep her forever. My plan was to sell her as a yearling. We were trying to keep things simple in some ways, with just one mare of several different breeds. But as you’ve heard me say over and over again, life happens, and I’ve learned not to hold too tightly to my plans. I love following the feelings that lead me to places I never expected to go.

And Jazzy? She has been one of those beautiful surprises.

The years following her arrival brought some incredibly tough losses. So many beautiful souls I truly believed would be with us for a long, long time have crossed that rainbow bridge. Jazzy was here to witness so much of it, and somehow, right in the middle of the heartbreak, she became one of my little sources of light.

The moment I was near her, I could find myself giggling and smiling. No matter what was happening in the world around me, Jazzy had this way of bringing me back to the lighter side of life. A reminder that even through grief, there is still room for laughter, joy, and a little bit of silliness. ❤️

And that is just who she is.

No matter where she fits into the herd, Jazzy makes no fuss. She is easygoing, curious, and always ready to offer the very best scratches. Just ask any of the horses! She is everyone’s favorite scratching buddy. 😂

Joe loves how levelheaded and curious she is, and honestly, she has so many of the traits we value most in our mares. She is sensible, kind, and steady, with a beautiful mind to match her gorgeous looks. Add in that stunning bay coat, all the right white markings, and one sparkling half blue eye, and she is quite the package! ✨

Of course, there may be a little more magic in her future. It will be a few more years before she and Des have the opportunity to create some of their own magic, but I think Des may have voted yes on that idea when she was just a little one living across the fence. ❤️

He would stand guard while she slept, and so often I would find the two of them simply standing together, hanging out like old friends. There was something pretty special about watching that connection grow.

This coming year, I plan to begin Jazzy’s riding education, and I am SO excited to see what she thinks about this next chapter. I can’t help wondering how much she will be like her mamma, Rainy, and what little pieces of her own personality she will bring to the journey.

Funny how the plans we make sometimes lead us to the very things we never knew we needed.

Jazzy wasn’t supposed to be a forever horse. But somewhere along the way, she became a little ray of sunshine in our lives, a steady presence through difficult times, and a mare with a future that I am genuinely excited to watch unfold.

Maybe I’ll take you along for the journey? ❤️🐴✨

SD Miss Silverina — Barn Name: Rainy

As time passed and I got to know Des, it became very apparent that I had the Gypsy bug. By this point, I had my diversity well in hand with Moz, Remi (Quarter Horses), Crystal (Fox Trotter), and Cassie (Fjord). Now it was time to find just the right Gypsy to help us provide horses to meet so many different people’s preferences.

This started a whole new level of contemplation. What did I most want in a Gypsy? I began searching colors, bloodlines, and combinations. There are so many rabbit holes to explore here, but that doesn’t help you get to know Rainy, so we’ll save those stories for another time.

What I settled on in my search was silver dapple and SD bloodlines. As I continually scrolled through Facebook, there she was! Just the right mare, five years old and in foal. What a bonus! And she was only a few hours away!

Of course, we had to look into it a little more, so we did.

When we brought Rainy home, she was a bit underweight, with her foal at her side. We began the journey of getting to know one another, and with every passing day, she has become more and more important to me.

There is something about her that simply makes me happy. I can groom her for hours, and the time just flies by. Then came the time to start her under saddle, and in those moments, everything I had first believed about her when we met became clear.

She takes everything in stride and is always game for whatever comes her way. I love how much she enjoys getting out, going places, and doing things. I smile just thinking about the joy I feel when I’m on her back, exploring our own backyard. A place I ride all the time somehow becomes a whole new adventure when I’m riding Rainy.

Once again, that gut feeling is proving just how true it can be when it comes to what I’m trying to create with our breeding program.

I’ll tell you much more soon about the beautiful bundle of joy Rainy came home with, but for now, let’s just say that this spring, she blessed us with her first little one by Des. And those two knocked it out of the park with a home run in Echo!

Echo is a reflection of her momma in so many ways, while still expressing her own individuality and carrying Des’s zest for life. She is such a wonderful combination of both parents.

Rainy fills a space in my heart that our wonderful Shakira left behind. They are very different mares, each special in her own way, yet similar in the way they have touched my heart.

Some horses come into our lives for a reason we may not fully understand at first. Sometimes, we just have to trust that feeling, follow our hearts, and let the journey unfold.

Rainy has certainly reminded me of that.

Finna Ellisdatter — “Cassie”

This mare became part of our family after a great deal of thought and contemplation. It is a bit of a long story, so hang in there with me for all the details!

Many years ago, our local Fjord breeder, Brandy, entrusted me with riding and training one of her client’s horses. That experience introduced me to a breed I have come to deeply respect and admire. As the years passed, my love for Fjords continued to grow. There is just something about their kind nature, versatility, strength, and steady presence that makes them so special to me.

Eventually, that love led me to follow a woman on Facebook who breeds Gypsy/Fjord crosses. I was hooked immediately—no questions asked! You know how it goes: the more you think about something, the more likely it is to find its way into your life. Hehe! No surprise there!

Before long, this wonderful mare came to me for training. She was one of the easiest and calmest horses I have ever had the pleasure of working with. In just 30 days, she went from her first ride to confidently heading out and riding alone. With more than 30 years of experience, I can tell you that a horse like that leaves a lasting impression. There was something truly special about her, and she certainly helped deepen my appreciation for this wonderful breed.

Then came an even bigger surprise: this beautiful mare had foaled a little bundle of joy named Hassle. When Gwen told me she was available to purchase, you can probably guess what happened next! Within days, I was at her house, and yes, Hassle came home with us.

Finna Ellisdatter, barn name “Cassie,” formerly known as Hassle, has proven to be every bit as special as I could have hoped. She is kind, sweet, lovable, and one of the easiestgoing horses I have ever owned. She stands taller than most Fjords and has an elegant, endurance-style build that gives her a look all her own. She is such a wonderful combination of the qualities I have come to love in these horses, and I feel incredibly fortunate that our paths crossed.

Life has taken many turns over the last few years, but this amazing mare continues to surprise me in the very best ways.

Last spring, we began seriously considering the possibility of breeding Cassie to Des. This was a decision that deserved plenty of thought. When you have a mare as special as Cassie, you want to be intentional about the cross you choose. For me, it was about more than simply producing a foal. It was about considering the qualities Cassie brings to the table and hoping to create a foal with that wonderful combination of conformation, temperament, and character that makes these horses so appealing.

Des, of course, we had a vision of what this pairing might produce, knowing that there is always a little anticipation and uncertainty when you bring two horses together. You can make thoughtful decisions and have hopes for a foal, but that little personality and package of characteristics is ultimately its own surprise.

And then came Iris!

This sweet beauty is a perfect example of exactly what I had hoped this cross would create. Seeing her here with us has been such a rewarding experience and a wonderful reminder of why we put so much thought into our breeding decisions. There is something incredibly special about watching a vision come to life in a foal and seeing the potential of a carefully chosen pairing right before your eyes.

Looking back, it all started with my growing love and admiration for the Fjord breed. One horse led to another, one experience opened the door to something new, and before I knew it, Cassie had found her way into our family. Now, through Iris, that journey continues in a whole new way.

Sometimes, the horses who find their way into our lives become so much more than we ever planned. Cassie is one of those horses, and I feel incredibly fortunate that my love for Fjords led me to her.

Let’s talk about one of those mares who quietly walks into your life… and somehow ends up changing the story.

Tobby’s Traveling Treasure, or simply Crystal, is our registered Missouri Fox Trotter.

Sometimes horses come into our lives because we planned for them.

Sometimes we search for them.

And sometimes… they find us.

Crystal was one of those unexpected gifts.

As a trainer, I’ve had the privilege of starting quite a few horses over the years and across many different breeds. One of the greatest gifts of that experience is learning that no two horses are truly the same. Every horse asks you to listen, adjust, and find the path that works for them.

And then there are the gaited horses.

I’ve been fortunate to have friends who love these wonderfully silly, incredibly talented breeds. Through them, I’ve gotten to fall in love with gaited horses without actually having to own very many of them myself.

Because, let’s be honest…

They are AMAZING.

But getting there can be an adventure.

Sometimes it feels like you are riding eight legs instead of four. They move in ways that make your body wonder exactly what you signed up for. And learning to put all those pieces together can take time, patience, and sometimes a whole lot of faith.

But then…

It happens.

The gait comes together.

The horse finds its rhythm.

And suddenly, everything changes.

It is beautiful.

So let me tell you about our Crystal.

She truly is a treasure, just as her registered name says.

Crystal came to me because she was a fearful little girl. Her owner was facing health challenges and knew that Crystal needed a new home.

I remember talking about her.

I remember saying that buckskin was one of my favorite colors in the whole world. I remember looking at those impossibly long legs and that tiny little body and thinking she was a swan waiting to happen.

There were a few conversations.

And then came the surprise.

Crystal was coming home with us.

We hadn’t planned for her.

We weren’t looking for another horse.

But isn’t that so often how the best horses enter our lives?

Not through a plan.

Not because we knew we needed them.

But because somehow, the right horse finds the right people at exactly the right time.

Crystal was just shy of a year old when she came home.

And for a very long time, she was…

ALL LEGS.

I honestly wondered if her body would ever catch up with those legs. I wondered if she would ever look balanced and finished.

Then, slowly, almost without us noticing, she began to change.

Month by month.

Year by year.

The awkward little girl grew into herself.

And suddenly one day you looked at her and realized—

Oh my goodness. Look at her.

Our little Crystal had become a beauty.

Then came another little clue about who she was meant to become.

Our friend Jodi has spent much of her life around gaited horses. One day she looked out across the pasture, pointed toward Crystal, and simply said,

“She is going to be great at gaiting.”

I smiled.

We would see.

This past spring, I finally started Crystal under saddle.

And Jodi?

Jodi was not kidding.

I have ridden plenty of gaited horses that needed time to figure it out. Time to strengthen. Time to balance. Time to understand what we were asking.

Crystal apparently decided she had other plans.

Walk.

Gait.

Lope.

Just like that.

No drama.

No great struggle.

No long period of searching for the gait.

She simply stepped into it.

And there it was.

That beautiful, effortless movement.

The kind that makes you sit there for a moment and think,

“Wow… this girl really is something special.”

And there she stands now, wrapped in that beautiful buckskin package, carrying all the promise of what she might become.

Which brings us to the next unexpected turn in Crystal’s story.

What happens when you cross a gaited horse with a non-gaited horse?

Well…

You probably don’t get a gaited baby.

But probably has always been an interesting word around horses.

I have thought about this decision for a long time.

Really thought about it.

Because breeding isn’t something I take lightly. You are not simply creating a foal. You are creating the beginning of another horse’s story.

And when I look at Crystal, and when I look at Des, I see two horses with qualities that I believe are worth bringing together.

Good minds.

Good balance.

Trainability.

Beauty.

Athletic ability.

And that intangible something that makes you want to spend time with them.

Could we get lucky?

Could we hit the lottery and get a gaited foal?

Maybe.

But even if we don’t, I believe we will still have something pretty wonderful.

A beautiful, well-balanced horse with a good mind, a willing heart, and the potential to become something truly special.

And maybe that’s the greatest part of this whole adventure.

We don’t know.

We don’t know exactly what this baby will look like.

We don’t know exactly how this baby will move.

We don’t know what little personality will emerge.

We don’t know what surprises are waiting for us.

But we do know where this story begins.

It begins with a little fearful filly who came to us when we weren’t expecting her.

A long-legged, awkward little buckskin who slowly grew into a beautiful mare.

A mare who surprised us with a talent for gaiting.

A mare who quietly worked her way into our hearts.

And now…

She is about to become a mother.

In April 2027, Des and Crystal will welcome their very first foal.

And somewhere out there in the future is a little face we haven’t met yet.

Tiny legs.

Soft eyes.

A brand-new story waiting to be written.

Maybe that baby will gait.

Maybe it won’t.

Maybe it will look like Crystal.

Maybe it will look like Des.

Maybe it will surprise us completely.

And honestly?

I can’t wait to find out.

Because if Crystal has taught us anything, it is that some of the very best things in life are the things we never planned for.

She wasn’t supposed to be part of our story.

And now I can’t imagine the story without her.

So here we go…

Crystal’s next chapter is motherhood.

And in April 2027, we get to meet the little surprise she has been carrying toward us.

A little package of legs, heart, beauty, and possibility.

And I, for one, cannot wait to see what she gives us.

What about you?

A new chapter is unfolding in our breeding program, and sometimes the most beautiful chapters begin with simply being willing to turn the page.

Change has never been something we wanted to fear. Instead, we have tried to follow it—to listen to what it is teaching us and to remain open to what might be waiting just around the corner.

Our Quarter Horse breeding program has been such an important part of our story. It has taught us more than we could have imagined about horses, breeding, patience, genetics, personalities, and the incredible responsibility that comes with bringing a new foal into the world.

And now, for a little while, that chapter is coming to a pause with only Moz’s last new little one coming in the spring.

Not because we have stopped loving the Quarter Horse. Quite the opposite. That love will always be part of who we are, and we know there will be another beautiful Quarter Horse mare in our future.

But sometimes you have to make room for new dreams.

Our dreams of incorporating the Gypsy breed have been growing, and with them have come some truly beautiful new mares who have found their way into our lives. As we get to know them, we find ourselves becoming even more excited about what the future might hold.

Our goal has never been to simply put two horses together and see what happens.

Every cross matters.

We believe in preserving and celebrating the qualities that make each breed special, while thoughtfully looking for the places where two breeds can complement one another. We want the cross to be a benefit to both sides of the equation—to create something beautiful, useful, kind, and thoughtfully bred.

These mares were chosen with that vision in mind.

They weren’t simply picked because they were beautiful. They weren’t brought home just to experiment.

They were chosen because of who they are.

Their minds. Their dispositions. Their movement. Their breed qualities. Their history. Their potential. And perhaps most importantly, the feeling we get when we are around them.

Because after all these years, there is something we have come to believe more strongly than ever:

The mare matters just as much as the stallion.

DesDun is the kind, consistent, solid-minded being we have always wanted to build around. But the mare standing beside him matters just as much. She brings her own kindness, her own strengths, her own expression of her breed, and her own piece of the future foal.

And that is where our hearts are right now.

We want to create horses that families can feel good about.

Horses with quiet minds. Kind hearts. Willing spirits.

Horses that don’t require everyone around them to be “horse crazy” to be loved and enjoyed.

Because when a horse is quiet and kind, people feel safer.

And when we feel safe, we become brave enough to try new things.

We become more adventurous.

We learn.

We explore.

We build relationships.

That is what we hope to give our foals—a foundation of kindness and a quiet mind that allows their future to be as big as their potential.

Of course, training will shape a horse. Good training can teach so much. But there is something incredibly special about starting with a foal whose mind is already telling you, I am willing. I am curious. I am here with you.

That foundation can change everything.

And as we have gotten to know these new mares, we have found those qualities in them in ways that have surprised and delighted us.

So now, we are ready to introduce them to you.

Each one has a story.

Each one has a reason for being here.

And each one represents a little piece of this new dream we are building.

We don’t know exactly where this road will take us—and honestly, that may be our favorite part.

We are learning to enjoy the discovery.

To trust what we have learned.

To honor the horses who brought us here.

And to be excited about the ones who are waiting to take us into what comes next.

Our love for the amazing Quarter Horse isn’t going anywhere. ❤️

But for now, we are going to step into this new chapter with open hearts, curious minds, and a whole lot of gratitude.

New mares.

New possibilities.

New dreams.

And perhaps, some of the most beautiful surprises are still waiting to be born. 🐴❤️

In May of 2016, a little ball of life came into this world.

From the very beginning, Remi was a pistol—the kind of foal that made you smile just watching her move. Full of life and fire, quick as a cat, and completely her own personality from day one.

She was the perfect combination of her cow-horse-bred dam and her solid, ranch-tough sire. She was also the only foal born that year.

We had decided we were done with that part of our horse life. But then came the thought…“Maybe just one more. Let’s go for it.”

Her big brother, Scooby, was a big, strong horse with so much to offer, so we took one more chance. And this time, we got our filly.

We got Remi.

She grew into everything we could have hoped for—strong-built, strong-minded, beautiful, and wrapped in that unforgettable grulla coat.

At six months old, we sold her, as that was simply what we did at the time. But when she was two, we had the opportunity to buy her back.

We didn’t hesitate.
We brought our girl home.

Remi became a riding horse, a teacher, and a part of so many memories. When we returned to the breeding side of the business, there was never a question that she would be part of the next chapter.

She gave us Nitro, and he was something special from the very beginning—beautiful, athletic, and carrying so much of his mother in him.

Then, in 2024, we bred Remi to the same stallion again, hoping lightning might strike twice. And somehow, she did one better.

In 2025, Remi gave us Raven.

A solid black filly with the same fire, spirit, and zest for life as her mama.

We had so many plans.

Then, when Raven was only three weeks old, our beautiful Remi suffered a terrible colic episode.

We thought we had years ahead of us. More babies, more rides, more memories, and more mornings seeing that beautiful grulla mare looking back at us.

We fought. We hoped. We prayed. But ultimately, we had to say goodbye.

There are no words that really explain what it feels like to lose a horse when you weren’t finished loving her yet. When you had already imagined all the things you would still do together.

You just never know when you’ll look up and think…
“But I had so many other plans for us.”

That is the part that hurts the most.

Remi wasn’t supposed to leave us then. We had more chapters we wanted to write together.

But she left us something more precious than we could have ever known...

Raven.

Every time Raven runs, we see her mama. Every flash of fire and attitude makes us smile because we know exactly where it came from.

Raven is more than a filly.
She is a piece of Remi that she left behind for us—a gift, a legacy, and a reason to smile through the tears.

We would give anything to see Remi standing beside her, watching her grow. To watch them together. But we can’t.

So we will love Raven twice as hard. We will tell her about her mama, carry Remi’s story forward, and be forever grateful that her mama left us one last gift in her.

Our Remi.

Our pistol.

Our beautiful grulla girl.

Gone far too soon, but never forgotten.

Until we meet again, sweet girl. ❤️

You left hoofprints on our hearts that time will never erase.

And in Raven, a little piece of you will run forever.

Maserati Moon aka “Moz

Sometimes you don’t realize how much a horse has become a part of your heart until you find yourself looking at her and realizing that some chapters are coming to an end.

Moz has been part of our lives for more than 17 years. She has been there through seasons of change, countless rides, lessons, adventures, laughter, challenges, and memories. And now, as we look toward the spring of 2027, we are preparing to welcome her final foal.

It is a beautiful thing—and a bittersweet one.

Moz was born in March of 2009, during a year filled with so many moving parts that I often felt like I was herding cats just trying to keep everything moving in the right direction. 😂 Somehow, through all of those years and all of the changes, Moz became one of the constants in our lives.

She grew up helping people discover new ways of communicating—not just with horses, but with themselves and with the people around them. She has touched so many lives over the years, and she has given us more memories than I could ever put into words.

And then there was her love of running. ❤️

Moz has always been the fastest horse in our herd, and she has inspired more than a few spontaneous horse races over the years. Her rider was pretty much guaranteed first place while the rest of us watched her disappear into the distance, eating her dust! 💨🐎 There is something unforgettable about watching a horse run simply because she loves to run.

When the time came for Moz to become a mother, I was especially excited. Her first foal would carry three generations of our breeding history—a connection to so many years of planning, dreams, hard work, and horses that came before her.

She gave us Durango, and two years later came Aurora, who holds an especially special place in our hearts as DesDun’s very first foal.

We have always bred our mares every other year, giving them time to recover, enjoy life, and simply be horses between babies. And now we have reached a milestone that feels both exciting and emotional.

Spring of 2027 will bring Moz’s final foal. ❤️

I don’t think I’m quite ready for that sentence to mean what it means.

There is so much excitement in wondering what Moz and Des have cooked up for us this time. But there is also a lump in my throat knowing that this will be her last baby and that we are closing one very special chapter of her story.

Moz isn’t just a mare in our breeding program.

She is a piece of our history.

She represents generations of horses, years of dreams, and countless moments that brought us to where we are today. She has taught us, challenged us, made us laugh, carried people, raised babies, inspired races, and left her mark on more lives than she will ever know.

So as we wait for her final foal, I find myself incredibly grateful.

Grateful for every mile.
Every race.
Every lesson.
Every baby.
Every laugh.
Every challenge.
And every memory.

One more baby.
One more chapter.
One more beautiful piece of Moz’s legacy.

And somehow, I think that final little foal is going to be very, very special gift.

09/27/2026

So, I’ve been thinking about how to tell the story of how all of this really got started.

And honestly, it goes back to three mares — Moz, Remi, and Shakira.

Those three mares gave us Durango, Wh***ey, and Nitro.

At the time, we already knew how much we loved the Gypsy breed, so we found a local breeder to take the mares to. I had an idea in my head of what I thought I wanted to do with the program.

My original plan was pretty simple — I thought I wanted to concentrate on Gypsy/Quarter Horse crosses.

But while all of this was getting started, I was still training outside horses.

And I think that ended up having a bigger influence on me than I realized at the time.

Working with different horses, different breeds and different types of horses got me thinking. I started seeing things I liked in all kinds of horses and wondering what might happen if I put some of those qualities together.

Then I had these three young geldings growing up and starting their riding careers:

🦄Jasper — Haflinger/Gypsy cross
🦄Jax — Mustang/Gypsy cross
🦄Legend — Mustang/Gypsy cross and Jax’s full brother

They were all so different.

And they were all really cool horses.

Watching them grow up and seeing what they became got me thinking even more about what was possible.

I started thinking, What other crosses would I like? What kind of horses do I really want to produce? What could I create if I wasn’t so set on just one direction?

And then, of course, life started bringing some pretty amazing mares into the picture.

That’s when the idea really started growing.

And then came DesDun.

That was a pretty big turning point.

He opened up a whole different side of the vision for me. I realized I didn’t want to limit the program to just one type of cross. I wanted the diversity. I wanted to be able to explore different crosses and see what they could produce.

But I also wanted the possibility of producing full Gypsies.

So, little by little, what started with three mares and a pretty simple plan started turning into something much bigger.

Looking back now, it’s kind of funny how little I knew about where this was all going to take us.

The horses kept teaching me.
I kept learning.
And the dream just kept getting bigger.

And I think that’s one of the coolest things about this whole journey.

Sometimes you start out thinking you know exactly where you’re going…

…and then the horses show you a whole different path.

So that’s where we’re going next.

We’re going to tell the story of Moz, Remi, and Shakira — the three mares that started it all.
