Getting some things seeded in the high tunnel today! Satisfying the spring fever from this stretch of nice weather. Feels like spring is barreling in fast, but I have learned to hold back this time of year.

A couple rows of carrots, beets, and greens in the tunnel and some lettuce and brassicas for transplant is plenty for now!

We will wait till early March to plant onions, and mid March for direct seeded root crops and leafy greens. By end of March all cool weather crops need to be planted. Sometime in April we lose track of everything and hope for the best.

Hakurei turnips! we only grow them in the fall and they are in their prime right now. Fresh harvest is in the coolers , got them out of the field before the hard freeze.

So sweet and almost creamy, they are excellent raw or roasted. Thinking about miso/maple glazed roasted turnips now…

High tunnel education for me this year! Things are coming along, but I think I needed to plant a little earlier, as many things will be too small until later in the winter/early spring. Also broccoli and cauliflower has some premature bolting, possibly from big temperature swings inside the tunnel.
Hoops and row covers seem to be necessary because the single layer of plastic doesn’t provide much insulation. Finding that if it’s 19 degrees outside it’s only a couple degrees warmer inside. But once the sun hits it could be 80 inside!

Always learning. Next I’m looking to find a corner in here to use for seed starting to get a jump on next spring/summer.

Finally putting price tags on my charcuterie boards, and added a few new ones to the mix.

I milled them from trees we cut down as we thin overgrown land and convert to silvopasture for our livestock. Instead of cutting the best trees as in conventional logging, we leave the great trees to continue maturing and thin out over-represented species or diseased trees.

They are sealed with , a food grade sealant with a citrus oil base.

Check them out at and I’ll be adding more every week!

Getting ready to build a shelter for the sawmill! Site prep clearing trees and leveling ground with proper drainage.

This poplar was one of those trees and will be one of the 24’ 6x12 beams for the building.

How to cut a 24’ beam on a sawmill that can only cut 16’? Patience and a skid steer grapple are a must.
