Humble Beginnings
Bishop Family Farm was established in February 2018 after we determined that our daughter, Sophia, was serious about her 4H sheep project and would continue on with the endeavor. Sophia’s 1st year was spent raising two bottle baby Katahdin lambs as a trial run. These lambs were later sold at auction with the proceeds being used to purchase her first three show lambs (Miranda LAMBert, Lightening (whether), and Elizabeth).
Sophia, with help from her brother Gabriel, raised and cared for the lambs from March 2018 until she showed them at the West Virginia State Fair in September. She done well for her first time out and earned several ribbons throughout the event. Lightening was sold at the exhibitor’s auction at the end of the competition and again, the profits were set aside for future purchases and the start of her college fund.
This year, Gabriel also began 4H and his lamb project meaning that we will now have need of at least 4 lambs. Knowing this, Miranda and Elizabeth were sent off for breeding with the intent to use their lambs for the 2019 show season and also increase our flock. Our desire is for the kids to continue raising and showing lambs to teach them responsibility and allow them to get a jump start on a college fund through selling show lambs as our flock grows.
Join us here at Bishop Family Farm as we document the kids’ adventures and growth in the sheep industry to share their learning experiences. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing everyone at the shows. Remember to support local agriculture through 4H, FFA, and other great programs to help ensure a future for our children and nation.
