If you're looking to getting into raising meat rabbits, I've got a few tips to share with you before you buy.
1. Don't necessarily buy the first rabbit you see on FB. Or maybe even the second or third. You're not desperate; you're looking for quality stock that will last, breed, and feed you and your family.
2. Know how to take care of rabbits before you buy. Yes, there are lots of things you'll learn along the way, but have a good idea of how they should be housed/fed/raised before you jump in.
3. Don't buy from a "breeder" that just sends you a bunch of cage photos with the rabbits all in a lump. Ideally you want to see 3 photos of the rabbit. One from the side, top, and from behind. All of these should be posed. But even 1 posed photo is better than a photo of rabbits lumped together. Don't be afraid to ask for more photos.
4. Don't pay more than the rabbit is worth. Pedigreed rabbits with lineage that extends back with quality stock is worth the price. The rabbit "breeder" that is just pumping out rabbits and selling whatever they breed, without being selective, isn't worth your money or time.
Now, rabbits don't have to be pedigreed to be breeders but knowing what you are getting is important. Plus, good breeders will cull rabbits that aren't of the best quality and not sell them.
5. Do ask questions. There are no dumb questions and good breeders are happy to share any and all information regarding their rabbits or meat rabbits in general.
Meat rabbits are becoming more and more popular for home meat production and there are going to be a lot of folks out there selling rabbits. Be selective about what you buy! Good quality rabbits are going to give you years of homegrown meat for your table. π β€οΈ
