East Side Pantry Girls Represent! 💪🍎

Kristy showed up strong at our first community meeting for the Emergency Food Access Plan — name badge and all! Seeing “East Side Pantry Girls” on that tag was more than exciting… it was a reminder that grassroots voices belong in these rooms.

We’re proud to be part of shaping real solutions for food justice in our community. This is just the beginning.

Food and access to food for all people is central to the Lost Sierra Food Project’s mission. We have been tracking the government shutdown and the disruption of SNAP benefits closely so we can help. Did you know that nearly 13% of Plumas County’s population receives SNAP/EBT? That’s 2,423 people, including 651 children and 549 seniors over 65. This harmful disruption to direct assistance not only withholds food from a large number of people in need, it also hurts our local economy as SNAP monies are spent in regional grocery stores.

So what can you do? First, if you need food during this time, please visit the wonderful Plumas County food pantries and groups like WIC and the Plumas Crisis Intervention & Resource Center. The community is here for you! The Food Bank of Northern Nevada has a local food bank map including hours of operations (linked below). Second, share food pantry, community supper, and resources with your friends and neighbors. Word of mouth on where to get help is important. Currently, we do not know how long SNAP benefits will be delayed. Lastly, if you are in a position to give, cash donations are accepted at the local food pantries, and at the Feather River Food Co-op which is hosting a fundraiser this month and next.

LSFP will continue to share resources on where to give and where to get help as we learn more. Food is a human right and no one should go hungry in our agriculturally rich country.
