We got quite a rain storm yesterday morning. I got a first hand clear view of the storm as it rolled overhead. I’ll admit, I was nervous as the thunder roared and the lighting flashed overhead, but we pushed on working inside the high tunnel.
My suspicions were confirmed that blight was indeed infecting the tomatoes. I will be burning all the tomato plants, as blight gets into the soil and can stay for up to 5 years. I may plant mustard in the tomato isles as my cover crop, as that will help the soil heal. A call to the local OSU extension is also planned, what a great resource.
I harvested what good fruits I could, even some green tomatoes to experiment with. I passed on saving seeds of marigolds, zinnias, and other flowers; knowing I could make better use of my time, and use what I have saved previously.
Now that I have a semi-blank slate, I have the opportunity to fix some errors that I made in the initial set-up. Some things worked well, and others have not, but that’s the joy of gardening. Each year you can experiment and do what works for you.
I am very thankful for the help I received yesterday. It always makes me happy to see many hands come together and get a project done. We were able to call it a day by 1pm. The cool weather worked in our favor, and the pitter patter of rain was soothing as we moved up and down the isles.
Now I need to get caught up on paperwork, and switch gears to focus on the next step for the kitchen, and get the exhaust hood/stove situation figured out. It’s been a thorn in my side for far too long, and has hindered my progress. I’m ready to tackle it and figure out a solution that won’t cost $40k. I’m such a grey area, and it’s been a journey to get this far, but I am like a bad penny, I just keep turning up. 😉
