August is leaving us with the expected arrival of Hurricane Dolly, in the next week. The rain continues almost daily, heat index still high, and please continue to hydrate. The recipe of the week is a ONE STEP ONION AND OLIVE BREAD-Sift 1 1/2 c bread flour and 1 t salt, 1/2 t black pepper, 1 envelop yeast in a large bowl. Finely chop 1 medium onion, sauté in 1T EVOO, for 1 to 2 minutes. Set aside to cool. In another large bowl add 1 1/2 c hot water, 1/2 c cold milk, cool to room temp, add 2 T EVOO. Stir in onions and 1/3 c chopped ripe olives. Mix together and form a rough dough, turn out on a surface dusted with flour. Form into a loaf and place in a oiled pan. Allow to rise for 1 to 1 1?2 hours or double in size. Bake 375 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. John's Co-Op will have fresh eggs from Dennis, Forest Farm honey, preserved items, and black beans. August is winding down and the rain continues as well as humidity. School is back in session and the fall activities are in full swing. The recipe of the week is SLOW COOKER SPINACH AND ARTICHOKE DIP-combine 2 cans water packed artichoke hearts drained and chopped, 20 oz spinach that has been thawed and squeezed dry, 1 jar Alfredo sauce, 8 oz cream cheese, 1 c shredded mozzarella, 2 c shredded Italian blend cheese, 1 c Parmesan cheese, 1 c milk, 2 cloves minced garlic, place in a slow cooker and cook covered for 2 to 3 hours. Serve with lots of dippers. Farm Swap is tentatively scheduled for tomorrow. John's Co-Op will not be at market tomorrow. Vegetables are scare to bring to market. Our green beans are progressing but nI will return next week to the corner of Stillwell and Industrial Drive here is Crestview.

Our market tomorrow may have the Farm Swap sharing some spaces. The recipe of the week is CARROT PILAF-Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Add 1/4 c EVOO to a large Dutch oven over medium heat, add 1 onion sliced into 1/4th" strips, sauté until softened about 9 min, Add 2-3 peeled and shredded carrots, 4 cloves minced garlic, 2 t salt, 1 t black pepper, 1T cumin, 1t turmeric and sauté until carrots have softened. Add 3 c vegetable stock, 2 cans drained and rinsed chickpeas, simmer 30 min. Sprinkle 1 1/2 c jasmine/basmati/or other long grain rice over top of vegetables. Gently submerge rice and cover. Bake 45 minutes. Remove from oven and let rest in pan for additional 15 minutes. Stir together and serve. John's Co-Op will have preserved relishes, sweet and red onions, peaches and cream corn, tomatoes, acorn squash, Honey crisp apples, carrots, and beets. Forest Farm honey and fresh farm eggs from Dennis will be available. no other vendors have responded. Oh my-August is here and school will be starting really before we know it. The recipe of the week is for FIESTA SCRQAMBLED EGGS-Chop 1/2 c onion, 1/4 c sweet red pepper, 1 seeded and chopped jalapeno, Heat 1 T oil in a large skillet, sauté vegetables 3 to 5 minutes. Whip 8 large eggs and fold in sauted vegetables, 1 c shredded cheddar cheese, 1/2 t salt and 1/2 t pepper 8 slices of crisp bacon, chopped in small pc, Cook until completely set, It will be a slim market tomorrow, heat continues to be intense. John's Co-Op will have eggs from Dennis, Forest Farm honey, preserved vegetables and lots of stories. Summer produce is very sketchy right now so be patient while the next crop comes of age. No other endors have responded as of this newsletter. Come to the corner of Stillwell and Industrial Drive here in Crestview on Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM. Holy smokes July is one week away from ending. We survived the Tropical Storm this week, some flooding around the area but overall most recovering. The recipe of the week is THYME PECAN CARROTS-Prepare and bias cut 3 c carrots, place in a large saucepan with 1/4 c vegetable broth, 2 t ch fresh thyme, and 2 t maple syrup, cook until tender crisp. Raise heat and cook until liquid reduced and carrots are glazed. Toss with 1 1/2 T ch toasted pecans and season with fresh black pepper. (may use glazed pecans for a more decadent finish). John's Co-Op will have lots of tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, sweet potatoes, beets, farm fresh eggs from Dennis, Forest Farm honey, and some fresh jalapeno relish and chow chow. Farm Swap is scheduled to be at the market tomorrow but not confirmed at this time. Come to the corner of Stillwell and Industrial Drive here in Crestview, on Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM. Fall planting has begun in earnest so lots to look forward to.

July continues to be hot, humid, and giving us almost daily showers. The recipe of the week is a THREE PEPPER CHUTNEY-Chop 3 medium green peppers, 3 medium red peppers, and 3 jalapenos, 1 medium onion chopped. Place 1 1/2 c packed brown sugar and 1 t salt and the ch peppers in a large saucepan and heat to boiling, reduce to a simmer until thickened. Great with all meats. John's Co-Op will not be at market this week. Celebrating a birthday out of town, but will be returning next week. If anyone needs tomatoes or peppers for meal preps please contact me this week as Jackson Farm will probably have only a few days left of this season. No other vendors have contacted me so next week come to the corner of Stillwell and Industrial for fresh veggies. Meantime Baker, DeFuniak Springs have markets running this week.

The heat this month is typical, rain has been steady and something to bear with stoicism and plenty of water ingested. The recipe of the week is ROASTED BELL PEPPERS-preheat the broiler and wash and dry bell peppers, place peppers on the tray and broil until the skins are blistered turning occasionally about 20 minutes. Place the peppers into a resealable bag and let cool. Peel and seed peppers. Cut into desired pieces and place into a jar with 3 halved garlic cloves, 1 t salt, 1 t black pepper, and 2 c EVOO. Let stand overnight to meld flavors. It is pepper season so using these for salads and sandwiches, pasta sauces, chilled soups is just right. John's Co-Op will have fresh Forest Farm honey, eggs from Dennis, garlic, tomatoes, onions, beets, cucumbers, zucchini, and preserved items. It is Farm Swap Saturday and in the past chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, rabbits, and goats have shown up. No other vendors have committed so come see me for; farm gossip and a friendly face. Welcome to July and the first market is also tht 4th, a big summer holiday with lots of activities going on around the nation. To celebrate the 250th birthday celebration the market will be open with lots of options. The recipe of the week is A TOMATO VEGETABLE CASSEROLE-Pre heat oven to 425 degrees and in a 13 by 9 baking dish toss together 1 med potato, 1 med sweet potato, 2 carrots, and 1 red bell pepper, cut in 1/2 " pcs, 2 T EVOO, 1 3/4 t black pepper, 1 1/2 t salt, and toss together. Top with 1/2 red onion cut in rings, then 1 large large zucchini cut crosswise then 1/2 " slices. Drizzle with 1 T EVOO, salt and pepper to taste. Slice 2 large tomatoes and place over the zucchini layer. Drizzle with 1 T EVOO and salt and pepper. In a small bowl mix 1/2 c fresh parmesan cheese, 2 T Italian bread crumbs, sprinkle over vegetables. Bake about 40 minutes or until vegetables are tender. John's Co-Op will have cabbage, summer squash, zucchini, red and yellow onions, beets, butternut squash, green, banana, and jalapeño peppers, green and red slicking tomatoes, sweet potatoes, fresh Forest Farm honey, and eggs fresh from Dennis's farm. No other vendors have committed ay this point but come to the corner of Industrial and Stillwell Avenue her in Crestview this Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM. I will celebrate this wonderful morning with you. No fireworks just some great conversations about growing and preparing food. Later on at Twin Hills Park the big town celebration will be happening.

June is almost gone and Farm Swap is present tomorrow as well. The recipe of the week is ONION AND BEER SOUP-Melt 1/4 c butter in a heavy pan, add 4 lb chopped onions and sauté until lightly caramelized, add 4 cloves of ch garlic and cook 1 min. Peel and chop 1 potato and add to pot, Add 3 T beer, or sherry and simmer 3 min. Add 4 c vegetable stock ( may use half in beer), 2 sprigs fresh thyme, 1 bay leaf, salt and pepper to taste and simmer 35 min. Blend to desired creamy consistency. Garnish with ch parsley, fresh grated Gruyere cheese, and croutons. John's Co-Op will have yellow and red onions, okra, cabbage, butternut squash, tomatoes, mangos, avocados, beets, Forest Farm honey, eggs, and some preserved items. Welcome to the first Tropical Storm of the season, May all of you be safe and dry this morning. This is Father's Day weekend and blessings to all of you DAD'S. The recipe of the week is STEWED TOMATOES AND MUSHROOMS WITH POLENTA- Heat 1 T EVOO in a large pan, add 1 lb mushrooms (oyster, crimini, sh*take, your choice) torn or sliced in pieces. Cook 10 to 12 minutes or lightly browned. Season with salt and pepper. Add 14.5 oz whole tomatoes, 2 small, diced zucchini, 1 c water. Season with salt and pepper, add 1 oz torn basil. Make polenta by boiling 3 c water, 1 T salt, add 1c coarsely ground yellow cornmeal. Cook on low heat about 30 minutes or tender. Add 1 T butter and/or heavy cream for a creamier consistency. Place polenta on a shallow dish and top with stewed tomato mixture. Garnish with more basil leaves. (Lost Boys Mushrooms in Pensacola have a great variety.) John's Co-OP will not be at market tomorrow, called out of town, but will return next weekend. Harker Family Foods will bring lots of sweet and savory preserved items to make great barbecue add to sauce for the best Dad's day events you may have.
