Feeling my privilege. Enjoying the first broccoli, and first onions, of the season in a chicken korma made while camping in VT. Farmshare members probably won't see broccoli for 2 weeks - these are the guys who jumped the gun. The chicken part is chicken tenders, because they're just so easy to cook, no cutting needed.

So now you know: you won't see me or Zack at the farmshare pick up or Troy Waterfront Farmers Market , we're in the woods. A big thanks to the crew for holding it down while we're gone!

And here's how we grow the winter squash and melons: on a big sheet of landscape fabric, with planting holes burned through and irrigation drip line tacked down on top. The landscape fabric is a great w**d barrier, and we just cover the whole growing area for these crops that sprawl out. The other advantage is that it keeps the fruits from coming in contact with the soil, which decreases the chances of rotting or getting eaten by insects.
You might notice that the seedlings in this picture are white - they have been sprayed with a product called Surround, which is kaolin clay. Anyone who is in to skin care might recognize that as a face mask ingredient. In this context, we're not helping their complexions- this product creates a physical barrier to prevent cucumber beetles from munching, and also acts as sunscreen on this very traumatic day for these plants - they've been in the safety of the greenhouse up until a few days ago, and have been supported by each other in the tray up until the moment they're planted, so they're not used to so much sun and wind. The clay will wash off in rain, but it is a temporary protection while they get used to their new surroundings.

Want to see how we grow summer squash and cucumbers? We put down rolled plastic mulch using this mulch laying implement on the back of the tractor. While it's laying down the mulch and covering the edge with soil, it's also laying down irrigation drip line underneath the plastic. Once this "plastic bed" is made, we can use our hands or Trowels to poke through the plastic and plant the seedlings in the fluffy soil below, next to the irrigation line. Then, our seedlings can grow unencumbered by w**ds, in soil warmed by the black plastic, and we can water them whenever we want using water pumped through the drip line. Then, after about a month of harvesting, the plants will likely be sick or dying from downy or powdery mildew, or they will be slowing down fruit production because they are bred for a concentrated harvest, and we'll mow them down and rip up the plastic. We plant 5 successions of both summer squash and cucumbers each summer. Our first planting is just starting to flower, and these beds will hold our second.

June grass is just the most amazing thing. The pollen in a bit overwhelming in a not wonderful way, but the speed of growth, the lushness, the vibrancy are all superb!

Zack and David are in our usual spot and they have chicken sausage! They have our seasonal special flavor, Spring Dumpling, pictured here as a stir fry with wild foraged mushrooms, kohlrabi, scallions, and rice. The sausage itself is full of flavor, with four kinds of pepper, tamari, scallions, chives, ginger, garlic .... so many yummy things.

Hey members: many of you asked what to do with kohlrabi, and I replied, "eat it raw!" Here I am peeling one and cutting it up, to eat as a snack while I make dinner. I'd already cut the leaves off, because I was going to sautee those for dinner. We just snacked on the raw slices while everything else cooked. That's all I want when it comes to kohlrabi! What are you doing with yours?
