Folkways Wines & Spirits

Folkways Wines & Spirits Wine, spirits, and objects that explore the art and culture of drinking. Evolving existing rituals and inspiring new ones.

Our wine and spirits curation is guided by the desire for discovery: We highlight atypical regions, grape varieties, and styles of wine, focusing on diverse, naturally driven vintages, conscientious winemakers, and small production vineyards. Our similarly varied, considered objects range from handcrafted vessels and refined stemware to unusual homewares and conversation-prompting publications fro

m around the world. Whether it’s the artists who transform vines into the wine we sip, the artisans who craft the cups we clink, or the individuals who shape the places and ways we gather to share a glass, we strive to celebrate and cultivate community in our store and through our offerings. Folkways is located in the 1917 landmark train station building of Croton Falls, New York, and founded by husband-and-wife team Jonas Andersen and Natalie Marie Gehrels.

Cheese is coming to Wilton, CT —
Before it arrives, we want to build the program with you.

Taste with us on Saturday, April 25
1–4pm
Croton Falls, NY + Wilton, CT

Loire wines and a lineup of cheeses we are considering. Vote on what stays.

Top of our list:
Linedeline from Blakesville Creamery
Ash-ripened goat’s milk. A line of vegetable ash through the center, a nod to Morbier.

With Hervé Villemade Sauvignon Blanc, 2023
Clean, mineral driven, the acidity lifts the creamline.

See you there!

It all starts with the winemakers, farmers, and artisans we work with…the passion and conviction for their process inspires everything we do at Folkways.

Let us present to you Brianne Day from the Willamette Valley.

Brianne Day didn’t grow up in wine country—she grew up next to it, sneaking drives through the Willamette Valley as a teenager, convinced it was someone else’s world to inherit. A detour to Italy at 19, and a conversation with an old shopkeeper who explained why his grapes could only ever come from that village, made her realize that wine was culture you could drink. She spent years chasing that idea across New Zealand, Australia, and France before returning to Oregon in 2008, determined to make wine the way she had seen it done: with minimal intervention and maximum honesty about place.

The result is Day Wines. Her wines are time capsules of a specific harvest, a specific hillside—some classically rooted in Pinot and Chardonnay, others more experimental. If you haven’t tried them yet, now’s a good time to start.

Her Eola Springs Vineyard Chardonnay spontaneously fermented in neutral barrels, then aged in French oak barrels. Notes of lemon curd, honeysuckle, and white flowers, with a bit of weight on the palate, but cleaned up nicely with minerality and acidity on the finish. It’s something truly special and not to miss!

Mylène Bru ‘Zingara’ Marsanne 2022
Mylène Bru farms a lovely, organic four hectares of vines on Mediterranean scrubland, just north of the city of Sète in the Languedoc. We don’t drink enough Mediterranean wine in general, and this fascinating Marsanne — a variety you don’t usually see outside of the Rhône — is really worth the exploration, especially with a few extra years of bottle age. We often avoid white wines with a touch of weight, but that’s a mistake: this wine isn’t not oaky or buttery or overly waxy, just present, with an herbal, garrigue-inflected sense that can only come from growing vines around juniper, honeysuckle, and broom.

Slow Dance ‘Close Haul’ Napa Valley 2023
Slow Dance is a relatively new California winemaking project started in 2018, focusing on “capturing a classical and rustic interpretation of natural wine in California.” Vineyards are either farmed by the winemakers themselves or fruit is purchased from organic vineyards throughout different vineyards in CA, then vinified at their facility in Richmond without any winemaking additions or filtration at all. ‘Close Haul’ is an homage to what a Napa Claret might have been once upon a time, before big money and industry smoothed all those wines out into the same marketable thing. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc are all together here and showing candied plums, cocoa, roses and spice - just makes us a believer in the rugged-pretty thing that California oughta be able to do so well. Terrific bottle.
