Can I brag on this brutha right here right quick? This is Chef Martel . I had the absolute pleasure and joy of partnering with him on a dinner event last week. Homey absolutely crushed it! First of all he learned to cook from watching YouTube videos! YouTube y’all! The menu he turned out was incredible, thoughtful, culturally centered, honored culinary traditions of the African diaspora, and most importantly delicious. Aaaaand he didn’t have a sous chef. Did it all himself.
It’s so rare to see a Black chef AND a Black somm in the space. This is only the 2nd time in all of my 10+years of being a nyc vet, that I’ve worked with a Black chef! 2nd time! Nights like this are incredibly meaningful and impactful. Our stories, our culture, our lens, our food-are worth celebrating. Let’s get it!
