David King, the father behind King Family Vineyards and Roseland Polo, is remembered each Father’s Day weekend with our David L. King Memorial Tournament, now in its seventh year this Sunday, June 21st.
Having played polo for years in Texas, David wanted a slower pace of life away from Houston, with enough flat land to continue the sport he loved. When he and Ellen purchased Roseland Farm in 1996, they couldn’t have imagined it would become both King Family Vineyards, a beloved destination with award-winning wines, and Roseland Polo Club, a thriving club that has made the sport accessible to so many and welcomed teams from across the country and around the world.
Interestingly, polo came first. While a series of fortunate events led to the growing of wine and the opening of a tasting room, the polo barn was the first structure built on the property. As tasting room visitors looked out at the field with curiosity about the sport being played nearby, it was clear something special was taking shape. Before long, Polo Sundays were started - a tradition that continues to bring together wine lovers, polo enthusiasts, and families from across the region.
Following David’s cancer diagnosis and passing, Ali King, Stuart’s wife, stepped up to carry on his passion. Today, Roseland Polo Club has grown into a powerhouse in the Virginia polo community and beyond, for spectators and players.
This Father’s Day, we invite you to celebrate the dad whose vision created a tradition unlike any other in our community. Join us for the finals and consolation matches of our David L. King Memorial Tournament. Gates open at 10AM, with matches held at 12PM and 2PM.
