What does a good herd bull actually cost in 2026? If the number in your head is still close to $5,000, the math behind a common rule of thumb suggests that figure is out of date.

University of Illinois Extension's beef program lays out the traditional shorthand producers have used for decades to budget a bull purchase: a herd bull should be worth roughly 4 to 5 times the value of a feeder calf, or about 2 times the value of a fat steer. It's a rule of thumb, not a formula, but it scales automatically with the cattle market, which is exactly the point. As feeder calf and fat cattle prices have climbed, the same multiplier that justified a $5,000 bull budget a few years ago now points somewhere much higher.

Using a commonly referenced 2023 bull-budget figure of around $5,000 per head as a starting point, and accounting for the 55-75% increase in feeder cattle prices since then, that same rule of thumb implies a 2026 bull budget somewhere in the rough range of $7,750 to $8,750 per head, and the Extension piece notes some producers chasing higher-end genetics now need to plan for $10,000 to $15,000. None of these are official reported average sale prices; they're a budgeting heuristic scaled to today's calf values.

A bull that's underpriced relative to the calves he'll sire is arguably the cheapest place to cut corners in a cow-calf operation, and also one of the easiest ways to quietly underinvest in genetics for years, since a single bull's influence compounds across every calf crop he sires during his service life. At the same time, nobody should read a rule-of-thumb multiplier as a mandate to spend a specific dollar figure; individual budgets depend on herd size, breeding-season structure, and how a bull's cost gets amortized across his working years.

This is a framework for thinking about the number, not a target price for any specific operation to hit.

If you've priced a bull recently, did a rule like "4-5 times a feeder calf's value" match what you actually saw at the sale barn or a production sale, or did the real number surprise you either direction?

Red showed up early for dinner last night. It was a little cooler than it has been for a while so they started coming out of the woods a couple hours earlier.

Big chunk of meat and I would definitely try it. My issue is the quality, no marbling and no fat cap makes for a questionable eating experience.

This is exactly why we only source the best breeds and best quality stock within the these breeds to raise for quality beef!
