Our last field trip of the school year at American Village. Walt asked one million questions, climbed everything in sight, and he brought his pet snake to show all his friends. I didn’t know the snake 🐍 was with us until we made it to Montevallo! American Village does a great job of bringing history to life.

“If you have been afraid that your love of beautiful flowers and the flickering flame of the candle is somehow less spiritual than living in starkness and ugliness, remember that He who created you to be creative gave you the things with which to make beauty and the sensitivity to appreciate and respond to His creation.”
~Edith Schaeffer, The Gentle Art of Homemaking

“And when you crush an apple with your teeth, say to it in your heart:
Your seeds shall live in my body,
And the buds of your tomorrow shall blossom in my heart,
And your fragrance shall be my breath,
And together we shall rejoice through all the seasons.” — Kahlil Gibran.

Just a little O Brother, Where Art Thou moment of pickin’ and grinnin’ with friends. Does anyone else have a hard time getting their man to slow down and spend time with friends? Family and work can be all encompassing but friendships are super important. That’s what this picture of these guys singing, “I am a man of constant sorrow” makes me think about—I need to encourage Brandon to spend more time with friends and I need to make time for that, too!

Aunt Sarah is back in town! She has been in South Sudan for a while, before that Uganda, Turkey, Italy, Spain, and more. She is our window to the world from our cozy-safe-bubble in Cullman, AL. Next stop for her is Poland. We are thankful for the time we have with her and grateful for the example she is for our children. She is a skilled architect, hard worker, brave, adventurous, and faithful to go where the Lord leads her. She uses her gifts to show love by meeting the tangible needs of the vulnerable. We love you, !!!

Ola is the MVP of Revival Hill Farm and she is about to get her spring break. Haddon is getting ready to dry her up for this season. Ola supplies many homes with “pet” milk and is getting a full break for a year while we train some of the other cows. Haddon (13) told me this week he is going to have to look for a summer job since he won’t be milking every day. I told him he could just take a break. Milking a cow every single day is a hard farm chore and Haddon and Henry make a great team!

This time last week I had the privilege to participate in interviews with 10th grade English classes. Susan Boyd one of my high school English teachers was completing a project with the students highlighting women of the past and women of the present. I have so much respect and admiration for teachers who go above and beyond to educate and inspire their students! It was a wonderful full-circle experience. I love that these women who taught us so much consider our stories worth sharing with this new generation.

Cell phones.... They can be used as a tool, weapon, entertainment, distraction, or for communication. They pose EMF health risks and emotional hazards such as bullying, po*******hy exposure, and screen addiction. They can be used to acquire knowledge, encourage others, and ensure safety. But is this social norm a requirement? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? At what age are children ready to take on the weight and responsibility of using this tool? Every tool has a power. Every power has the potential to create change. Every tool in itself is neutral, but can either build up and be useful or tear down and destroy in the hands of the user. Have you had these conversations? What did you decide? Light thoughts for a Thursday morning.

The AHSAA tournament ended for us with a bang. Cullman’s boys won the 6A State Championship for the first time ever! These boys were so inspiring to watch. It was great catching up with friends, teachers, and coaches. Shortly after the game, a fight broke out and there was an active shooter scare. We still don’t know what happened for sure, but are so thankful for safety. I’m sure many were injured in the stampede and chaos. Please keep those traumatized or injured today in your prayers. Congratulations Bearcats!

One of our AirBNB guests took this picture of our pony, Rosie. I love everything about it. I haven’t been posting much about the farm lately. It’s been more kids, business, and family. But you know what that means... it means after all these years of struggling through managing the farm and life we have finally gotten to a place where there is rhythm. It’s not quite SO. MUCH. WORK. The kids are not strapped to our backs while we manage the land and animals. They are working by our side helping us and it is a little easier, a little more balanced, giving us space to chase after other dreams while maintaining the day to day maintenance of our farm. Just a word of encouragement to those pursuing the homesteading life—the early years are hard and there is a BIG learning curve, but with time it does get easier! The animals will always be my favorite part, each of them bringing a unique perspective and life lesson. Thank you for the pictures I loved seeing our farm through your artistic eyes!

One more month and he is a teenager! One more year and he plans to be zipping around on a motorcycle. Did you know you can get a motor driven cycle license at age 14 in Alabama? This includes small motorcycles, mopeds, must weigh less than 200 pounds, no more than three wheels, doesn’t include tractors… He has been researching all the things. I’m not sure I’m ready for that, but he is. We will see how this pans out. We are in uncharted territory.

I talked Brandon into being the guest speaker at this month’s FMCO Gathering. When he was in seminary one of his favorite classes was a Marriage & Family Counseling class. Afterwards he got certified as a Prepare-Enrich Facilitator/Administrator. So he pulled out those tools and shared them with all the couples at our event. It was a great way to end our week long Anniversary vacation. We were able to have time to ourselves to evaluate our own marriage and then use what we’ve learned and struggled through to encourage other couples in their marriage journeys.
