Ruffin Farm

Ruffin Farm Information and pictures to share with our friends on the history and current events of the farm Kennedy. Mardelle, "Maw Maw", passed away in November of 1977.

The home was originally built and owned by the Persons family, Lovett and Melinda Persons. No official records have been found stating the actual date of construction of the home, but is estimated to be in the 1840's. The farm was purchased by Asa Lee Ruffin in 1918 from his uncle in law J.L. "Ace" and his wife Mardelle Kennedy Ruffin raised 10 children on the farm and enjoyed the visits of severa

l grandchildren and great grandchildren over the years. Ace, "Paw Paw", passed away in April of 1984. Their oldest son, Jack along with his wife Juanita, lived in the home following Paw Paw's death. Juanita passed on in 1990, and Jack in 2008. Following Jack's passing, Johnny, Jack's youngest brother, and his wife Joan Ruffin assumed ownership of the home and just over 100 acres. An additional 200 acres joins the property and is owned by other family members. Joan passed away in December of 2011. Johnny and his youngest son, John live on the farm currently. Johnny in the original home place and John in the barn which has a small apartment. John raises Boer and Boer cross goats. In 2012, 30 acres previously used to grow wheat and soybeans was converted over to use for a dove hunting field. Beginning in the spring of 2013, the field will be established in sunflowers, millet, wheat and sumac. A pay dove shoot will be hosted on opening weekend in September of 2013.

Stan’s on the tractor feeding the cows some fresh hay this cold morning. Also, Mr. Crow had to add his 2 cents worth at the end. 🤣

Number 7, “Moodelle”, is one of our oldest cows. She turned 10 this year. She’s much better after her minor foot surgery yesterday. That’s her daughter, number 6, she’s grooming.

Keeping them healthy and pain-free is one of the many responsibilities in raising cattle. This old girl had a small piece of steel wedged between her toes causing a good deal of pain and swelling. We raised the hoof, removed the metal and cleaned it with iodine.

If anybody happens to stop by the farm today or tomorrow, please use the driveway at Stan’s shop (the hay barn). We are having some driveway work done at the house.
