For those of you who have wondered about the meaning behind our name...
🕯️🐝 Lessons from the Beehive Extra Credit — Honey Bees & the Saints (for All Saints Day) 🌿👼
As the world celebrates All Saints’ Day (Nov 1st)— a time to honor all saints, known and unknown, and to remember the bond between the living and those who have gone before — it’s the perfect moment to reflect on the deep, sacred connection between honey bees, saints, and the soul.
✨ Bees and the Saints
Honey bees have long been seen as messengers between heaven and earth — symbols of purity, diligence, and divine order.
🍯 St. Ambrose of Milan, the most famous patron saint of beekeepers, was said to have had a swarm of bees settle on his infant face, leaving behind a drop of honey — a sign he would speak with a “honeyed tongue.”
🐝 St. Gobnait (St. Abigail) of Ireland used bees and honey for healing, and is beloved as the protectress of beekeepers.
🚢 St. Modomnoc is credited with bringing the first honey bees to Ireland from Wales, earning his title as the country’s patron of bees.
💘 Even St. Valentine, known as the patron of lovers, is sometimes honored as a guardian of bees and beekeepers — a symbol of love, sweetness, and life renewed.
🌼 Bees, Rebirth, and the Soul
Across ancient Celtic and Christian traditions, bees were believed to guide souls between worlds — a link between life, death, and rebirth. Some legends say the soul leaves the body as a bee or butterfly — carrying life’s sweetness into eternity.
🕯️ The Sacred Light of Beeswax
In the Catholic faith, bees’ labor is honored in the Exsultet, an ancient Easter hymn praising the bees whose wax gives light to the Church. Every liturgical candle must contain beeswax — its purity symbolizing the flesh of Christ, the wick His soul, and the flame His divinity.
So as candles glow this All Saints’ Day, remember — behind every holy flame is the humble honey bee, whose work bridges earth and heaven, labor and light, soul and sainthood. 🌙🐝✨
