105 lambs born to 61 ewes over 17 days (18 Apr-04 May).

We would typically expect a higher lambing percentage but have a lot of first time moms this year.

Average birthweight across the group sits at 8.43lbs with rams being 8.60lbs and ewes being 8.22lbs.

14 more moms to go with this being the first time lambing for all but our oldest ewe who has yet to lamb and may be nearing the end of her productive life.

We started producing our own hay this past year and are pleased with what appears to be a vote of approval from the flock, we anticipate their reaction when they are fed some of the better quality rolls that we are saving for later in gestation.

For those searching for a new flock sire, the ram with the brown socks is this year’s clean up breeder and will be going in with the flock in about a week, he will be available mid April just prior to lambing. The other three rams were primary breeders this year, have complete their task, and are available now.

We chose to take advantage of the inclement weather by holding the flock in this paddock longer than typical. It is a relatively poor quality paddock and will benefit from all accumulated manure and hay that has been rolled out over the past week or so.

It takes them a little while on a purely grass/hay diet but overall we are pleased with how well these girls put their weight back on.

And that ewe lamb looking at the camera is growing out nicely.

“Buddy” is one of five rams selected to breed a group of ewes this year.

He is just a few days over seven months old in these pictures and approaches his task with keen eagerness. In between periods of grazing and attending to his own group of ewes he can often be found standing along the fence line peering longingly at the ewes in the other groups.

His dam consistently produces high quality offspring, especially rams. However, due to constraints with our breeding program this is the first year we have been able to use one of her rams as a group sire in our own flock.

We look forward not only to the quality of Buddy’s offspring, but also to the quality of those offspring from his dam who is paired with a very nice ram out of another top producing ewe in our flock.
